| Pregnant Female and Frontline Is it safe to use Frontline Top Spot on a pregnant female? It says on the box that you can use it on pregnant or lactating females, but I wanted more opinions on this. |

My furkids Donating Member | I am not a breeder but, (IMO) I wouldn't do it. My Mom gets dog fancy magazine. She was reading, just the other day, that a dog that was fronlined (or one of the other brands) could be smelled on his breath. I have also read where the saliva was tested and it was in their saliva! I know there is a natural flea spray that you can buy on line (or in Maine, that's where my Mom buys it) that will not go into their blood stream. Maybe you could talk to your vet and see what he thinks. JMO

| Actually I wouldn't use flea spray or flea shampoo because pups are all in mom's hair, often sucking on it. I use frontline on my gals but only after their 50th day and at least a week before they whelp. A few days before they whelp I give them a bath with a mild shampoo and I don't use conditioner. They need to be clean with neat hair but absolutely no residue on the coat.

She feels it may have caused the problems she had with a litter. I think so too. I would say no...I wouldn't treat a pregnant female

| Vets will tell you it's OK .. most breeders will say different. I will NOT be using Flea or Heartworm meds any more while mine are pregnant. I have a female that lost one and went on to carry 2 having them on the early side. The second time she was pregnant she lost the 1 she carried early. Both time she was given heartworm meds about the same time, Late in her pregnancy. Was it from the chemicals or just something that happened..I don't know. I may breed her one more time and see how she does without using any chemicals. At least I'll know if it happens again, it wasn't because of the use of chemicals. There have been other breeders who wondered if using these chemicals had caused birth defects to some pups that were born. |

| i put it on a pregnant bitch about the time the embryos were actually forming after my vet told me to. I had two puppies born and one was dead and very deformed even tho I washed the medicine off within a few hours after putting it on. i hardly every use flea medicine on my dogs but I use Dawn to kill the fleas and fleacomb them every day. I also treat my yard. we have super bad ticks this year. I haven't seen any fleas yet tho. |
