| Improving/Hurting the breed Is it bad breeding ethics if you have dog outside the standard, size only, with a fantastic temperment that you breed down with a smaller mate? Does anyone have any comments on doing this? To me this seems like the whole basis of breeding but someone told me that the dog/bitch outside the standard should be fixed no matter what! |

| First of all welcome to the site. I am not a breeder so I won't even try to answer your question. We do have some people with strong opinions so please don't get offended if some responses are negative.

| I agree that dogs outside of the standard should be fixed and not bred. I know they can be great pets and have wonderful temperments and there is nothing at all wrong wth having a larger one as a pet. I have one myself. I just think breeders should breed only to improve the breed and that definitely means breeding to the standard. It seems these days too many breeders arent breeding to improve the breed.

| It would depend on the size of your girl and how far out of standard for size she is. A 7 lb frame girl could be over weight or very solid built. If one has a very nice girl and say 8 lbs on a 7 lb frame and the parents were within standard. I would breed her to a smaller male to bring the size down. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I asked a breeder why she was breeding an 8-pound dog, and her reply was that it had other superb qualities such as excellent bone structure. I guess it would depend upon all the other qualities, but it does seem that having a great temperament is pretty common in yorkies. I might add that this breeder was having a problem with customers all wanting smaller dogs. Breeding is far more complicated than it first appears, you don't always get the trait you're breeding for. A small male dog may be the runt of the litter and his offspring could be huge, on the other hand, it's possible that your dog could have small puppies. That's why knowing the pedigree of the dog is so important, knowing what all the ancestors were like.

| There is no perfect yorkie...all will have some faults. But I believe only the best of the best should be bred...those that meet the standard with very minimal faults. Showing is a great way to get opinions on how well your dog meets the standard and whether or not it is worthy of being bred or not. So far as size..if you have a bitch that is slightly over 7lbs but is exceptional otherwise then I can't say you shouldn't breed her. I personally wouldn't breed a bitch that was too far over standard though.

| breeding These things are not so black and white to me..size is one factor among may in regards to what is suitable for breeding. In my eyes, pedigree is first...you need a quality gene pool to dip into in order to get quality puppies of any breed. Confirmation runs neck and neck with pedigree...a bitch who may run in the 8 or 9 pound range, with an excellent pedigree, silk coat of proper color, erect ears, bite, good structure and temperament can be an excellent asset to a breeding program. A quality stud of superior pedigree can correct a size fault rather easily...also a coat fault, color etc..but if you breed a bitch with a size fault and no pedigree to draw on, then you are expecting her to perform a miracle and that is not fair to her or the breed. The size of the frame is far more important then the actually pounds...a solid, compact 7 pound frame may carry 8..and a long, lanky 9 pound frame, may carry 7..I will take the 8 pound, solid, compact frame bitch. | Thank you for being brave enough to ask this question. I have wondered the same thing but, have not wanted to ask. Hope you find the answer that you need to make your decision. I really appreciate YorkieRoses answer. It gives a very clear idea of what breed standard should be @ least to me, anyway. Thank you.

| Thank you... I would like ro say thank you to Yorkie Rose for being kind in your reponse. I think that helps me make a decision much better than someone telling me absolutly not to breed my little girl. Thank you for the insight again and for being so nice in your response. |
