Default Have any of you used this?

Instead of heating pads
I thought I'd go ahead and post this here.
Because I thought maybe some info to those of you havent thought about it.
I posted it in the nursery under Allies puppies.
Me being a country gal, I use it all the time...
Its just the metal clip on light with a 75 watt bulb that I lower the wattage as the puppies get older.

<<Right after I took the pics I turned the heating light back on.
I like that better then a heating pad.
I use it for brooding my geese , ducks and chickens too...its a more even heat.
And you dont have to worry about the new heating pads that shut off.
All the puppies love it..and as soon as I put them back in the whelping box .. on their backs .......belly up they go for their sun tans,,lol>>

Default heating

A number of heating devises work well...I always make sure there is a cooler area of the whelping box for mom to rest...the bitch can be very stressed when overheated I find.

I agree...
Never put it too close
I put it about 24 " above the whelping area
And only put it at one end.
I didnt even think that some may put it too close.
Thanks for pointing that out to everyone.
I just know what a pain it can be for those who do use heating pads to find them without the auto shutoffs sometimes now days.

I always use a heating lamp. It's just better for me but I don't leave it on all the time. I use the pad two or three days then go to the lamp.

I have used both...I mostly use the heating pad...I have an extra heater now that I use in the whelping room to keep the air in the room warmer...I don't like keeping moms and babies under the bright lights of a heat lamp...I worry about newborn eyes and I just think it is hard for mom to rest under a bright light...

I use a red heat lamp bulb when I do decide to use a heat lamp...It is much easier on the eyes but it is hot and you have to be careful not to start a fire with it...

I know! I didn't realize they didn't make them without the auto shut off until recenlty. I have three old one's that I hope last for years to come.
Do you know how long the new ones stay on before shutting off?

Mine burnt out after years.
And I looked all over...Rrrrrrrrr
My drugmart here in didnt have them without auto shutoff.
I bought one took it back when I found out..then searched for one that didnt do it...same as our Walmart.
And they only stay on like 3 hours tops.
I know you can still get them online ...for whelping supplies.
And for dogs that are cold alot. But boy some of them cost $$$
Figures when its for pets it cost even more..lol

I use the Snuggle Safe disks instead of a heating pad or lamp and I love them.
I put it in one end of the box so that the mom can move away when she is hot and the pups can stay warm. It lasts for 8 hours and you don't have to worry about them getting burnt on it or about cords sticking out.

These work great for transporting puppies to/from the vet's office as well. We have used them in the past for c-sections. Just be careful, our vet had a puppy burn itself on this because it climbed under the blanket that was over it. Poor thing burned its belly! We made a fleece cover for ours that closes with velcro so no getting in there!

We made a warming box with the instructions from Myra Savant and love it. That is where I kept my preemies for the first couple days. It is awesome because you can warm up your delivery towels when they start labor so they are ready to go and nice and warm! We also bought a car adaptor for like $20 at walmart in the auto department so we can plug the heating pad in while we are traveling too. It have been really handy!

I use a lamp. The thought of using a heating pad makes me nervous. The lamp works great!

The one I got came with a fleece cover on it that you can remove if you want. I make sure that I can put my hand on it without it burning me. If it didn't have the cover though, it would be really hot. I thought they all came with a cover but maybe I just got lucky that the one I got did.
The pups would crawl on it and fall asleep, they really seemed to love it.

Maybe that is something they just started. We have had ours for probably 3 years now and they did not always sell them with one. Maybe they listened which is good!
