Flaxseed Oil.....How Much To Use? I've heard from several people about the benefits of using flaxseed oil to maintain a healthy coat and skin. Do any of you use it and, if so, how much do you use per pound of weight? Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have no knowledge of using it for dogs, but in humans it can positively affect your hair and skin. However, excuse me for touching on a delicate subject, but it can also affect ones bowls (loosely) and I'm not sure how that would translate in a small breed dog... Hopefully someone else will have more pertinent information for you.

I found some info online but was just asking to get some input from those who may have used it. Here's an example of what I've found.......The FDA found that flaxseed oil stimulated the immune system, calcium was better absorbed, it has anti-tumor properties, was an anti-oxidant that kept cells younger, helped diabetic conditions, and lowered triglyceride and cholesterol. It is also helpful with kidney and liver problems. Use one teaspoon for AM and PM feeding for each 25 lbs of body weight. Always introduce oils gradually to prevent loose stools.

Fish oil is good for humans. I use it myself. It's loaded with the omega fatty acids. I see some dog foods that have a lot of fish in them. I was asking about the flaxseed oil for the skin and coat benefits primarily. I didn't know of the other benefits until I started looking at some info on it. Seems like both have some of the same benefits but I only heard of the flaxseed oil as far as skin and coat goes.

I buy a product called Healthy Coat which has flaxseed oil in it that you put on their food daily. I have been using it for a while and they like it and their coats feel great. You can buy it at lambertvetsupply.com.
