| Spoke with a breeder today Someone local to me, not Diesels breeder, but just wanted to talk to someone with some experience. I want to possibly get into breeding at some point, but I want to really get some experience around a good breeder first. I talked to her for quite a long time, and thought she had a lot of good things to say, talking about mentoring me when I get into it. I played sort of dumb, to sort of test her. I let her explain to me about genetic issues, possible puppy complications like hypoglycemia, limited registrations with her pups and the importance of it, lots of things. Everything seemed to really be going well, then I got some red flags go up....... 1. She said she goes to a vet by me for her Bulldogs that she breeds (never mentioned bulldogs in the conversation) 2. She goes on to tell me that not only does she breed Bulldogs, but at one point she had 40 Champion Cockers, but ONLY has 30 now. She says that they are all champions My thought is she would have to be very busy! 3. I asked about a litter of Yorkies she has now. I wanted to know if their ears were standing. She says "I don't know, I havent looked at them today". Well were they standing yesterday? I was just confused by this. She said she has a big pole barn that is very clean and well kept and has people hired to take care of her dogs. This just didnt sit well with me at all. She could talk the talk like anyone here, and was obviously very educated on breeding yorkies and other dogs. But why sooooo many dogs? I just didnt think this was the norm. I should have asked how many adult yorkies she has. I mean, if she has 30 cockers? I dunno, just seems odd to me.

| Your post reminds me of a couple of breeders I know. One is a vet and the other is an exhibitor. The vet has upwards of 40 Yorkies, the exhibitor I'm not sure of but she has litters pretty much year round. Their dogs are well cared for and are some of the best quality available in the area. I respect their knowledge and have learned a lot from them. However, I do not agree with their breeding practices. That's just too many dogs!! For me, there is a world of difference in taking care of your dogs and caring for your dogs. At some level, no matter how well it's done, breeding too many dogs is the definition of a puppy mill. IMO, puppy mills aren't always the stacked up cages with dogs lying in their own waste many commonly think of. Some are modern and clean with very high-quality animals. The thing for me that's missing from the equation is the social welfare of the dogs. Puppies raised in these environments can miss out on so much of the socialization that is critical during the most impressionable phase of their life. It's like they're little commodities. With that being said (I'll get off my soapbox now ), I see nothing wrong with taking what knowledge you can from her. You could probably learn a lot from someone with so much experience. How you choose to apply that knowledge to your own future breeding program is up to you. |

| 50something dogs is way too many....it seems to be expected in a puppymill but unfortutely I know of show breeders that have that many as well You've really got to check out any breeder

| That is way to many! Even if everything else is good, there is no way she can give time and devotion and love to each of those dogs, there's not enough time in they day! And to me, making sure the dogs are treated like family members is very important!

| I dont think that that "breeder" would be the best mentor you could have found. I would keep looking. How could she/he seriously mentor you when she has soooo many breeds? Does she know the ins and outs of every breed and all the genetic/health problems? Sounds like she hires the work done for her. She didnt even "see her babies" that day!!??? What does that tell you about her breeding ethics and responsibilities? |

| I don't know how a person could give the love and attention that all of these dogs deserve. I know that everyone is different, but for me, I could never put a dog in a kennel to live its life. Tammy |
