Default Overweight breeding female

I assume that it wouldn't be a good idea to feed a slightly overweight breeding female low calorie food...

I free feed. There are some of mine that I would worry about if they didn't have access to food all the time.

Any ideas on how to get her weight down safely?

If possible try to get her to get more exercise. Walking would be great for her.

I have two overweight breeders on Foster & Smith light kibble and not much else...also free fed and not sure that's a good idea for these girls...One is very overweight but has lost a little in the month or so since starting the "diet." I'm looking for advice on this too.

I can get her a good walk on the weekends, and she comes to work with me 2 days a week, where she can gets to play with several other dogs. I have a big fenced backyard, and usually when I get home on Mon/Wed/Fri it's already dark, so I sit out there with them for awhile and let them run and play. I'm afraid to walk her in the dark...but do you think that's enough exercise for her?

I should say that when I got her she was 6.5 lbs and she's now a little under 6. The vet said she SHOULD weigh around 5. So she IS making progress, I think they fed her a lot of table food, because she's a begger.

She's a cutie! It sounds like you are doing good if she has dropped some weight. I would rather have them a little over weight than under weight. It seems like they always drop some weight anyway after they get pregnant. With summer coming and longer days she will probably loose some more weight. What do you feed yours?

did you see the video in the video forum of Tumi on the treadmill? LOL it was so cute! Maybe you can invest in a treadmill and get her on an exercise program

I WAS feeding Innova, but am in the process of switching to Chicken Soup. Innova is just so rich...it seems to give them loose stool quite a bit. I love the food, but I think it's just too much for their little tummies. Plus it's very difficult to order the larger bags of the small bites. So anyways, I did research, had to down to three: Chicken Soup, Canidae, and Merrick. In the end I thought they would prefer that one over the others. It's also a good food to start the puppies on. The problem was, I couldn't feed puppies the Innova because the "puppy" version is too large. So I was feeding mine like 3 different foods. Hopefully this will be one they can all have good results on.

lol yes I did see it...it's precious. I think I'm going to go with the exercise program. She loves to walk, and I don't think it would take much to get her down to a good weight. She IS making progress, which is good...I don't want her to lose TOO fast. There would probably be more danger in that than being overweight.

It's so funny (but it's not at the same time) because she snores like a bear...lol

I feed my puppies Chicken Soup Puppy food and my adults are eating Canidae All Life Stages. I like the size of the Chicken Soup puppy kibble. Mine always have nice firm stools.

I love that stuff! It's really made a difference with Lacy whose hair has never grown well at all. But its slowly getting longer now. I'm starting to give it to Rylie now too and hope his hair will grow grow grow
