Default Question, pregnant yorkshire.

Alright, I know I may be called irresponsible and what not but it is what it is. And I am looking for advice.

We have a female by the name of Daisy, she was about 5 lbs. We also have a male Beckham who is close to 7lbs.

I was planning on getting Beckham fixed when we first received him, unfortunately time flew by and we now have a pregnant female.

We have taken a female to a vet that the breeder (of Beckham) recommended. The veterinarian says the female will determine the size of the puppies and if the male was bigger it should not be a big factory. He also states she is in good health condition and should have the puppies fine on her own.

I have read a few articles about if the male is bigger it will require a c-section but my vet says this is not true unless complications arise. Also these article that I have read are not from credible sources (i.e. not published in books) just the internet, which we all know can have large exaggerations.

She's getting close to her due date and I am going to take her in to the vet once more to see if she needs a c-section.

Any input on the situation would be great as I am a little scared. My mother has been through a dog pregnancy before and said it came out wonderful without complication, I just don't want this to harm my precious Daisy.

Beckham was fixed right after we found them tied, unfortunately the first time got little Daisy pregnant.

The puppies have homes already if everything does go smoothly as my family are avid Yorkshire owners and lovers. So no worries of homeless dogs or pounded animals.

Other than vet inspections we have not done any testing, the dogs are not related. The female was picked up as an adoption from a friend and has not had previous illness or issues although there are no papers since the friends we received her from could not find them although the breeder we got Beckham from stated she absolutely perfect for breeding and wanted to find a stud. The male is an AKC Registered with health certificates. Great healthy dog but larger than the female.

I have read up on numerous books on what to do and expect with pregnancy, I take her temperature each morning and night to see if she is doing alright. She is still active and responds to everything, just doesn't play as much which is understandable. The vet again said she looks and feels healthy and expect it to go okay, but I am going to take her in a second time just in case.

We have a place set up for whelping and a heating element in place, we also have substitute milk just in case.

It sounds like you are pretty well prepared. I really don't see think the sire being 7 lbs will make much difference. Many females require a c-section even when bred to small males. How old is the female and has she had pups before? X-raying the female would let you know the size of the puppies.

Do an x-ray as it gets closer to her delivery date and the vet can tell you if he feels that she can safely whelp them on her own. It sounds like your prepared for this and I wish you well!

Thank you for your help I appreciate the positive responses. She has a vet appointment friday, although her temperature was at 99 earlier. I am checking it again here in a few minutes to see if I need to stay up over night.

We have money already set back for emergencies and this will be her only pregnancy.

Temperature is a little over 100 last night and this morning. She is doing fine and still is active and cuddly. We don't let her jump on the couch anymore so instead she stands on her hind legs to allow us to pick her up. I'm scared she'll jump and hurt herself.

My girlfriend and her friends are ready to see the little pups. I honestly can't wait either, as long as everything goes okay.

1 Puppy this morning at 6 20 AM, Daisy is still having contractions.

Puppy looked to be nursing but I couldn't tell if any milk was coming out, is there any way to tell? I haven't seen anything in the pet books i read

Congratulation on the 1st baby. I hope all goes well. Usually the milk will drop as the puppies keep nursing. They really need the colostrum within the 1st two hours of their birth so I am sure they are getting that. Just make sure they can all latch on and nursing between puppies will also help with the contractions.

Does it seem like the pup is struggling to get milk out? You can usually squeeze some out if you start at the base of the nipple and work your way down.

well he/she doesn't seem to be latching on the nipple. I tried guiding him/her to it. And I can't squeeze any milk out

How long since the first baby was born? Are you giving mom Nutri-cal?
