Alright I will return it or just grab another one. Yeah since it is still getting cold at night up here in Seattle we'll probably need it. I just didn't see any pads with no auto-shut off, I'll look at Walmart or Target.

WOW 7 pups.
Wishing you and mom the best of luck with these babies.
Make sure you have her expen/crate/whelping area free from drafts too.
And keep a close eye on your girl she is nursing alot of pups that can be a major drain on her.
Do you know the trouble signs to watch for ?

The books say:

Shakiness, collapsing, keep checking temp daily, appetite, anything else?
She is lying down right now with all the pups.

Wow, I had to leave and go to the bank and store and I just got back. Seven babies! Congratulations! She must have been huge. I am so glad everyone came on to help. How much do you think the puppies weigh?. Make sure with the heating pad that it just covers part of the whelping box so they can crawl off if they get to hot. Momma will need 4 good meals a day with the last being right before you go to bed. She might not be real hungry if she ate many after births but try to get her to eat. You can add cottage cheese to her food. I always add canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice Puppy food to the dry food.

This site has a lot of info on it.
I love this site for someone who is thinking of breeding or new at breeding or even for those who have breed for years. It is a nice place to visit with a lot of reading all in one site.

congrats on all those precious babies.....the more i see these threads the more it makes me think about getting a female mate for my Smokey....he is old enough now to breed....i would love to experience the whole thing from beginning till forever homes for all the babies....Smokey's dad is a biewer and tends to throw big litters.....Smokey was one of 5 and his dad consistently throws 5-6 count litters.....his mommy tends to have at least 4 every litter...last litter her breeder said she had 6....so if i get a female and breed her to Smokey i will have to watch her very closely...

the females determine the size of the litter (not the males) the males determine the sex...

Congratulations on a successful whelp!
I feed 1/4 can science diet topped with cottage cheese once a day, and 1/3 cup of liquid milk replacement twice a day to control any calcium problems. Especially with such a big litter! It also helps Mom get back into some weight since she most likely looks starved at this point, lol
A warning about your heating pad. I had a friend lose a puppy that crawled down between the pad cover and pad, and died. She now puts velcro on the edges and seals it up completely.
I use a heat lamp at one end so that Mom can get away from it and a hook with chain that I can adjust up or down to adjust the temp on the babies.
I know that you've studied, but don't forget about the tail docking... I had someone PM me when their pups were 5 weeks old wondering when she should dock tails??
I especially appreciate the fact you did so much learning before the big day... Good job!!
Enjoy those babies!!

Thanks a bunch, I am getting ready to run to the pet store for the food and milk substitute. Grabbing a scale too. Yeah moms other favorite bed is at the other end of the xpen so she can move away when needed.

I will grab some cottage cheese and mix it in with her Royal Canine. She's been picky and ate her wet food that was mixed in with the dry food, but she stopped after the wet food was gone.

I hear the pups nursing and can see most latch but I'm wondering if I should just put the smaller ones on a bottle immediatley since it looks like they'll have to stack in order to each get their own nip.

Any input?

Oh one more questions that wasn't covered in my readings, can I bath the mother after birth? She's a little messy of course but I don't want to bath her if the pups can't find her by scent afterwards.

Thanks.

I can't answer as far a bathing mom. I think you could use a wet washrag and wash her down, then quickly blow dry her.

As far as supllimenting, I think it is better to suppliment the bigger ones while you let the smaller ones stay with mom. They need the colstrum from mom. You could try taking the bigger ones away and letting the smaller ones nurse first before putting the bigger ones back to nurse.

I agree with Sonya, just wipe her down but don't give her a full bath yet. She will be passing plenty of afterbirth the next 24 hours so she can wait until tomorrow for the bath.

With that many puppies you just need to make sure the little one is getting on a nipple. Like Sonya said, move a big one if you have to and let the little one nurse. You should try to get up during the night also and make sure the little one is nursing. They can go downhill really fast and get too weak to nurse if they skip a meal.

We will be looking forward to pictures too!

I give the canned with cottage cheese separate from the dry. Then I give a little bowl of the milk replacement. I leave the Royal Canin dry and in a separate dish available at all times. She will eat better after the 1st three days. I also clean her up best I can with a wash cloth and don't bathe her until after the 1st 3 days. They seem to stay with the babies non-stop until the 4th day, and it seems to take 3 days for the babies to decide they are going to make it. So I give her a bath on day 4.
I supplement all of them, the 1st day, and then do accordingly, as needed. It seems like the smaller ones go down so I especially supplement the smaller ones. They dehydrate really easily. I put the bigger ones on the smaller, new mom nips, if you know what I mean...(some nips are smaller and harder to latch onto than others) The bigger ones will pull out and form the nip from sucking so that the smaller ones have a better chance of latching on those later. Later, when the bigger ones are off sleeping, I will sneak a smaller one on a nip.
Crying means they are either hungry, cold, or need to potty.. (Mom should have taken care of that, lol) If you have one that is appearing too quiet and weak, I supplement every hour to get it back on it's feet.
This is just the way I do it.. Good luck!

Wow, I just saw this thread. You got excellent advice here. Keeping the pups warm the first 2 weeks is very important.

I put the little ones on with mom first, then let the bigger ones nurse. I also set the alarm for every 3 hours (sorry) to make sure puppies are warm, and to make sure the littlest ones are nursing.

What a good job you did.
