Default oxytocin may help bring down milk...

Congratulations, that is one big litter and you did great! I usually try to get new mothers to vet after they finish whelping for a shot of oxytocin, which helps her with several things including expelling any remaining placentas and stimulating milk production. I'll help you with bottle feeding info later if you need it.

She is producing milk and we are waiting to see if she nurses fine, we have tried helping the pups find the nipples by drawin a lil milk and putting their mouths to it, no luck. I am givin her a few minutes to see if she can get them to latch. How long before I start bottle feeding if they do not latch?

I am sorta thinking she might have a 7th by now I'm stressed out but keeping calm.
if their strong and active they will latch on, squeeze up the nipple open the pups mouth and latch it on, sometimes they just need a bit of help for the first time..you can put a tiny tiny bit of white karo on the nipple too...

the nutri-drops are not available at the superstores (at least not in oregon) I order all my needs from revivalpet.com

6 pups is a lot what is the normal weigh of your mom? She needs to be fed often lots of natural calcium or ask your vet for some injectable calcium to help her out...also you would be best served to suppliment the larger pups a few times a day to help her out.

Oh my goodness that is a big litter. 6 puppies is a LOT for a 5 lb female. Do not "wait" to see if they latch. If you don't have the nutridrops yet, use a drop of karo syrup on your clean fingertip and put it on each puppies tongue then help them to latch on. But first and formost make sure the puppies are warmed like Kimberly said BEFORE getting them to latch on. You should never feed a cold puppy as it can kill them. Nothing will kill a puppy faster than being chilled. So it is imparative that you make sure thier BODIES are warm, not just the room. Good luck and please keep us informed so we can help you not lose any babies. It is heartbreaking.. I know..

Oh I see that Kimberly was typing at the same time as I was.

Also I see you are in NH. I am sure it is still very cold there. If you have them in an expen you can wrap a light blanket around the pen wall on the outside and hold it in place with clothespins to keep drafts out. It also will keep mom relaxed if other dogs or people come into the room. At night I also covered the entire pen with a sheet to keep the heat in. If they are in a whelping box you can cover that with a sheet or a small lightweight blanket at night as well. I kept mine in a crate inside the xpen with the door open to the crate so mom can come out if she needs to. I put her food and water inside the xpen and a potty pad in a corner. This way mom could come out and eat or go potty and the babies are safe inside the crate. For the first week or so I kept a small blanket over the crate and put my heating pad under it. I used a crate pad as a bed inside the crate and used a small recieving blanket to lightly cover the babies if mom came out to go potty oir excersize. Make sure someone is always watching them tho so they don't get tangled in the blankets. I only did this when they were asleep.

They are latching on and feeding now, a local vet hospital said it could take up to six hours.
I mixed some wet food with her normal food and put a full bowl of water near her. She is lying down resting and still is attentive. Pups are all finding their nursing place and I did get a heating pad. She is now placed on her favorite blanket with a heating pad set on medium underneath, i'm checking the temp every few minutes to be sure its not too hot.

all pups are warm and breathing! I am searching around for nutri-Drops, thanks for all the help!

Never put the heat pad higher than LOW...you can over heat the pups and they can dehydrate...

glad their latching on

On low now, sorry it was only plugged in for a few minutes and wasn't too warm at all.

Thanks again!

oh crap this one does have auto shut-off. If we have a space heater (temp guided digital) set at room temp will this help any or should I return to the store?

I am glad its refreshing and I thank you for your kind words. I want the best for the pups and our precious Daisy. My girlfriend and I both are avid dog lovers and have grown up with them. She started crying when the first one came out cause she thought it was dead and i was rushing to get a heating pad, I quickly turned around the car and told her to get some gloves on and open the sack. She started drying it and it whined, she burst out in tears of joy. Its been stressful but so far worth it seeing this amazing site. I am doing as much as I can to keep them going, right now they are all resting and I can't stop checking on them... and I won't

Edit: Now time for me to grab a snack since I haven't eatin since 7 PM yesterday.

warm room will help of course, ,but the pups need to be really warm,, Me personally,, I'd return it ASAP and exchange for one without the auto shut off,, (its to prevent the elderly from injuring themselves) but doesnt DO for our tiny babies, Cricket slept with her heating pad til she was 6 months old and it was July in Texas,,but with us needing AC,, she needed some warm that long..

I would return it. I think I kept my heating pad on non-stop for about 2 weeks, then used it at night for a few more weeks. Mine were born in April in California. We weren't using AC yet so I didn't have to use it as long.
