This information about feeding newborn puppies has been passed on to me by a very successful show breeder who has been breeding Yorkies for two decades. He told me that the quickest way to set back newborn puppies is to feed them before they are old enough to handle more than their mother's colostrum. I didn't know this before because my vet would always have me tube feed them and I can tell you I did not always have the best outcome.

Good luck. I hope your puppies pull through.
thank you for your kindness. no, she hadn't had it before. The puppies weren't even due for about two more days but mama started struggling to breath and wheezing like an asthma attack. she laid down and wouldn't get up when she did, she couldn't walk so I took her to the vet and he thought she might die if we didn't get the puppies out. he was right about that I think so I agreed and given her breathing problem she didn't do well at all. Plus, I am so pissed at my vet. he only kept her one hour and told me to bring her home. As soon as I walked in with her, she started seizing. He told me to rush her back but I was afraid to do that. She stopped after two seizures but the babies were screaming every breath (effects of the anesthesia). mama couldn't even raise her head up until late the next afternoon so I was trying to calm babies down ,take care of mama, take care of the boy that had his intestines put back in and whew!!!!!!!!!! Well, you can imagine. The three that are left are thriving tho. Thank you for your well wishes.

thank you Joyce. I think we are on the uphill now. The three remaining puppies are thriving altho I do believe I have another Little Ms. Thang in the bunch. 3.5 ounces. mama is back to her sef and altho she doesn't seem to have an abundance of milk, the babies are growing. I haven't fed them since yesterday. so, i think I can breath now!!!!!

Dee, did your vet speculate on what caused the breathing problems before the c-section and the seizures afterwards? I know this isn't her first litter and she had no problem in the past. What was his prognosis?

I just can't imagine keeping a cool thinking head at a time like the one
you just went through.
Prayer's coming still for the remaining little ones and glad to hear
Mommy is coming back to being herself. Hope you can get a good
night's sleep and rest with a peaceful mind tonight.

No, he didn't other than the fact that her babies were pushing against her lungs. She sounded just like she was having an asthma attack. I think her age might have had a lot to do with it. She turned five last week and this was to be her last litter anyway. but he almost admitted he overdosed her . that is what caused the seizures. I am beginning to think all he knows is what I tell him. She should have never been put under but i got scared because she had five babies. After the fact, he told me her lungs were clear but I wasn't a nurse for twenty five years for nothing. I know her lungs were junky. I also got scared because she couldn't stand up or walk at all. She has always had five and no problems.

I know it must have been frightening for you when she wouldn't walk. Is she on antibiotics now? Did he ever mention drawing mom's blood, spinning it down to a clear serum and injecting it into the intraperitoneal cavity of the puppy's abdomens? It's a way for the pups to get mom's antibodies when they can't get the colostrum. I just learned about it and find it so logical. Sometimes it amazes me what these vets do not know. I'm so glad that your mom and her 3 angels are doing well. I hope you get that show puppy that you have been yearning for.

No he didn't mention any of that. i thought she was going to die right in my arms. I don't know now about a show prospect. i have a tiny one and one larger one (girls) I am still hoping tho. i swear, it anything like ever happens to me again, I am quitting. i mean it. it has just been awful but I think we are past it now. They finally got large enough for me to dock their little tails today. Waiting until tomorrow to do dewclaws tho.
