Checking the records? Other than talking to the breeder I buy my baby from, how can I find out about his/her genetics and other health problems that might crop up? I bought my studs from a reputable lady but I have since come to the conclusion she has Alzheimer's so I am not sure how true some of the statements she gave me are. I do know, from her own words, that she showed the father of my studs but didn't finish him. I bought my female from a breeder who was licensed thru the state and she said she has not had any genetic or health problems in her lines. How do I check this stuff out? Sylvia

I'm not sure how you would find out about genetics in the line if the breeder can't tell you herself, but you can make sure that the studs you bought are healthy by screening them for any genetic defects. You might want to do more tests, since they are 'unknown' than if it was a dog you had bred and knew the lines of.

Perhaps someone on here could help you if you post the breeders name and the line.

I believe you can go to akc.org and type in his reg. and look under pts. for this dog and it should tell you. With the breeder of the female it doesn't matter if she is state licensed or not in some cities that is required if you breed alot of dogs. Ask her for vet info. and what kind of health screening she does regaurdless if she is saying she has not had any health/gentic problems. Proof is in the pudding!!Breeding stock most be screened and tested. She might not have been contacted buy puppy owners or she may not claim it! Also somtimes when problems pop up and puppy is maybe 6mths or so some breeders only give 48 health guar. so that takes them off the hook! Alot of times people don't even bother to complain. Personally I would. Some breeders will not be honest and will not tell you what problems they have had untill you breed and find it out. That is why most good breeders do not let there stock go just to breed. They are very careful who gets there line! I can go on on this subject but I will stop!!! good luck! | |

Thank you for your responses. I prefer to keep their names private until or unless I find something bad out about them. The breeder of my female has gone out of business because of her health. The other lady, the breeder of my studs has a good reputation with the AKC so I expect her lines to be healthy. Sylvia

Just because a person has a good reputation with AKC doesnt mean the dogs are healthy breeding stock. I would call the breeder and ask questions about any health concerns.
