YT 1000 Club Member | All these questions? Here is a question that I am sure many will have an answer to. I was told by my vet and several other vets that unless there are elevated levels when they do a CBC they don't do testing especially if there are no other symptoms. I get CBC's on all mine whenever they go in for their shots or anything other than a routine visit. So if the CBC comes back normal and they are showing nothing but the picture of health would you still put the through the BA testing anyway? |

| I will say breeders might say no because sooooo many things can elevate it. Then you have Ellie. Her labs had been normal and her postprandial bile acids are 106... Because MVD can be asymptomatic and I prefer to supplement for it, all my Yorkies will be bile acid tested. Ellie's ALT was fine at the beginning of the year and did go to 118 later but is now back down. The vet only did it because I asked. With an ALT of 43, they don't think it is necessary BUT the ALT may not go up til the liver is 70% damaged.

| I would have a bile acid done by 6 months of age (normally before spay/neuter). Because of its prevelence, I will always have my yorkies (well, ALL toy breeds) Bile Acid tested before they are put under for the first time.

YT 1000 Club Member | That all makes sense. Okay let's say you've had the BAT's done and all levels came back normal, Do you continue to get them tested? If so how often? Also for the breeders that get them done and the Bat's came back normal , would you have the pup tested again after you have brought it home? |

| If I trusted the breeder, their lines were clear of shunts and the dog had no symptoms, I probably would not retest. If there was any doubt in my mind about the breeder, then I would.

YT 1000 Club Member | Thank you Ellie May and MyFairLacy. I have been doing lots of research for school. I am currently going for an associates degree as a vet tech and these are some questions I have had during my studies. I am sure I will have alot more questions once I get to the genetics part. |
