| c-sections This may be silly to some of you but I am a new breeder and I have lots of questions. I have been having a male yorkie for about three years and I recently bought three females to breed with him. We breed our first female(Maggie) on the 23 of Janruary. We are suppose to be bringing her to get an ultrasound done this weekend on the 16th. My question is...what if the puppies are breech when I take them. Does this mean that we are going to need a c-section? A breeder that I have been talking with thinks that if your females puppies are breech then it means that they are most likely going to need a c-section. I have had cats all my life and I've never heard of someone taking their cat to have a c-section and the babies are about the same size. When do you know if they need a c-setion? |

| No, it doesn't mean a c-section is necessary. If your girl was bred Jan 23rd, the pups won't be lining up yet. Your vet will let you know if he sees anything that may be a complication. A large pup is a concern. An ultrasound so early? Did your vet suggest this? You don't want to rush into a c-section. My girl had to have an emergency c-section once...she went quite a bit past due. I do want to say though, that she has had a litter naturally since then. Don't hesitate to ask questions or to do a search on here or the net....better safe than sorry. Good luck with your litter!

| Why an ultrasound at all? Why not just an xray? They are usually cheaper and that is the way I would go between the two. Is an ultrasound that much better?

| An ultra sound cant tell you in advance if you need a c-section. I have an x-ray done about 6 days before the due date. The vet can then do an educated evaluation at that point. X-rays are cheaper and IMO, an ultra-sound is not necessary. |

| I've never done an ultrasound. I would think it an unnecessary expense this early into the pregnancy. X-rays aren't done until a week before the due date. They aren't always exact with numbers, but are helpful if a pup has gotten too large to pass through the canal. I don't always do an x-ray either. You just keep on asking and searching for what you need to know and if there is something you'd rather PM me with, I'll help you in any way I can.

| Most likely you won't know if your gal needs a c-section until she is in trouble. Make sure that you study up and know the signs of distress as well as the amount of time allowable between pups during active pushing and inactive labor. Half of puppies born come into the world posterior (feet first) so this is the norm for them. Size and presentation is what you must watch out for and even an xray can't tell you all you need to know as they can move and grow until they are delivered. Good luck on your first litter.
