| My baby is sooo small I am taking my new puppy to the vet today but I am a little concerned. She is 7 1/2 weeks old and weighs .8 pounds. Ok I need to go back to school for a math class but is this 8 ounces? She seems to be doing well but did not eat real good this am.I have another yorkie that is a male and was small but I'm not sure this small. Both puppies came from the same breeder and actually have the same dad. Does anyone have any expierence with a tiny baby? By the way I am new on this site and this is my first attempt on the thread sorry if I do anything incorrectly. |

| Hi I see you are in WV, we are also. Your girl is really too young to be away from her mother. Yorkies should stay with their mom and breeder until 12 weeks of age. So much can go wrong when taken away so young. I will tell you there is a wonderful vet in Dunbar that shows and breeds maltese, i would suggest letting her take a look at your pup. I am not sure what her hours are this week but she is wonderful with the small ones. Are you familiar with Hypoglycemia? (low bloodsugar) do you have NutriCal? Take a stool sample with you when you go to the vet. When they don't want to eat alot of times it can be because of Giardia, but when one is stressed from the change of home they will have Coccidia And who did you get your baby from? | wow, that is tiny- the breeder should have kept her longer in my opinion. Not even 8 weeks and under a pound She's just under 13oz, but still... Be sure to weigh her a lot and make sure she is gaining. Leave food out all the time and watch it to make sure she is eating. Keep a VERY close eye on her because she could easily start to get hypoglycemia being that small and wanting to play with an older brother. Good luck and congratulations on the new baby. |

I do have to agree that your baby is just way too young to be taken from the mother. I personally would never get one under 12 weeks. My Zada was 14 weeks, Azrael 5 months and Raziel almost 15 weeks. At 7 1/2 weeks they still have a lot to learn from the mom. Buy some Nutri-Cal and give her about a dime size two or three times a day. Put her on rice and chicken, then in a few days you can add some steamed green beans. | |

| Thanks for your reply. Roxi seems to be doing OK and eating well. I do know about nutracal and she loves it. My vet checked her yesterday and said everything looked fine. I know I really must watch her for sugar problems but she never leaves my side. She comes to work with me. I was very happy to find this sight for advise. |

| I have to agree with what others are saying--that is far too young and too small for this pup to have been placed in it's new home. Most ethical breeders agree that 12 weeks is the best age for placement of a pup. Like mentioned, because these little guys are so small, when something goes wrong (like hypoglaucimia) it can happen very quickly. It is definately not a good idea to leave this pup alone unsupervised for long periods of time. Is there anyone who can pup sit while you are at school? Making sure that the pup eats enough, using the Nutracal when needed and frequent (if not constant) supervision of the dog would be my advice. |

| This little baby needs to eat every couple hours...Just a wee bit at a time she has a very tiny stomach...You also may want to add a small amount of Karo to her water...We sometimes put down two bowls of water, one with Karo and one without...This way if she is drinking water it will help to keep her sugar levels at a more consistent level...When her levels are too low she will not eat... This baby was really too small and young to let go from the breeder.. Our babies are here with us for 12 weeks at a minimum and they do not go home until they reach 2 pounds for however long that may take... It is imperative that you not leave her alone for any long periods of time...She could crash very quickly and you could lose her...These little ones are a huge amount of worry and work...I hope she does well for you!.. ~Laura

| My puppy was around the same size when we got him....he weighed 14 oz. He was around 10 weeks old. What are you feeding her and how often? We hand fed him gerber chicken baby food and this formula stuff that the breeder gave us. We fed him a little bit every 3 hours. We also gave him a little bit of nutrical and the morning and at night. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to PM me!
