I agree..

A dog is born with a tail and therefore presumably it has a purpose otherwise it would have been eliminated through genetic manipulation over many generations.

I couldn't watch the video. I started it and then turned it off. It looked so cruel.

My breeder did the docking but that was before I could say anything.

Anybody know why they do the docking? Whats the purpose?

It was originally done in working dogs to prevent tail injuries, still done for this reason but mainly for cosmetic reasons now.

Haha, yes, but I don't cut them short...I like them a little longer. The reason I do it is for the standard, but I'm really not here to argue about that.

Dewclaws are sort of the "thumb claw" of a dog...because they don't ever touch the ground when the dog walks or runs, they can curl back and grow into the skin, or get caught on something and rip since the tissue on them isn't as strong as those of their regular claws/nails. There's a lot of debate about that one too though. They're taken out the same time as the tail docking.

BREEDERS: if there are anymore reading this

im pretty sure the vet glued the tails after cutting..one of the males tails has a little tiny spot of fluid o guess leaking, its clear..but it looks like it needed glue there maybe? kinda like a little cut or hole..im not sure what to do i put neosporin on it and kept him from the mom for a little while to give it a chance to work...my mentor said she never had it happen and she lives about 2 hours from me so she cant look at it..i tried to take a pic but i dont think its good enough i will post it though. she said this has never happen to her and that her vet stitches the tails. and saif if i had clavamox to give that but i dont..

anyone have experience with this??

Do you have any styptic powder or gel? That will stop the bleeding, and the kind I have has Benzocaine in it to stop the pain as well. Antibiotics might be a good idea, but I wouldn't do it yet...they're so young. I'm sure it can definitely bleed, especially with just glue. I have never personally had it happen or seen it happen either. Maybe if YOU have some super glue you could try that to close it back up.

I have a friend that had a vet do her puppies tails and she said he uses some type of clue. She did not like it because it got all over the puppies

I do my own tails with a sharp pair of scissors and I used a product called Clotisol to stop the bleeding. The pups don't even lose a drop of blood most of the time. I use small cuticle scissors to remove the dewclaws and put some Clotisol on them also.

My little 'Tink' (Tinkerbell) still has her tail (which I think is cute curled up over her back!) and her dew claws, which I will speak to the vet abaout next time we go.
