Default Whining at night

Breeders how do you handle nights with your pups? Bella's litter is 6 weeks old and they wake up about every 2.5 hours at night. The first time i usually put momma in with them to quiet them down then the second time i will get up and feed them some puppy mush. My question is though is this normal? i dont think i can take many more sleepless nights!

By 6 wks mine have the tiny Royal Canin puppy 33 in with them at all times. If they are good eaters and not tiny, thats all they get. If not, I give them some wet food 3 times a day too, once right before bed. Mom is gone during the day and then in at night with them. I do that for about 1 wk and by 7 wks they are usually weaned. This can vary as some need to stay longer with mom , but thats my general rule of thumb. Mine sleep through the night , and if they wake up there is always food for them to eat.

Actually I keep momma in with them until they are completely weaned and that is after 8 weeks close to 10 weeks old. I dont' leave momma in with them during the day but I keep momma in with them at night. This is just what I do...

Default pups

Isn't breeding fun!!!??? LOL Seriously, it is good to post these things so people get the full view. I think I have lasted so long is because I have always made an area for puppies and dogs separate from our sleeping area. It is hard to work all day with dogs and stay up all night as you are finding.

Do you have a area far from the bedrooms to fix for the pups....they do not need to live there, just sleep there. They will learn to soothe themselves very quickly when they wake up...and do not see your face after a few screams. I leave food at night from 6 weeks on...no mother with them, but in a pen next to them so she can lick faces and check them...by 6 weeks mine want spearate places to sleep also.

well they have a seperate little place with their expen and food, but the problem is it is right outside my bedroom door. I would move them but they are in a good and warm site. I will just have to start letting them self soothe. I just hate to let them whine. They are so spoiled haha but if you saw them you would totally understand!

Default pups

I always try to have mine used to sleeping alone by 10 weeks at least once or twice a week...that way when they leave they are used to being alone if the owner perfers them to sleep in a pen, not the bed... I line up pens and they each had a place of their own...plus, they would spend about an hour of time during the day there, learning to be an "only" ...and I place each pup in a carrier for at least 15 minutes per day..if they go to a home with another Yorkie, they can forget my training, but if not they have a smooth transition.

My moma's stay with their babies until they are 8 weeks old or older. I have a bedroom that I use strictly for my mama's and their babies. I setup a exercise pen with the whelping box at one end. When the pups are about 3 1/2 to 4 weeks old I remove the whelping box but I put up a short divider in the pen so the pups are on one side and the mom has her space on the other side. I leave ground dry puppy food and water so the pups can eat when ever they want and the mom can feed them when she wants. I also put out a plate of ground dry food mixed with canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice twice a day. Now I must tell you, all my moma's are very spoiled. They keep me hopping all day long letting them going back a forth from the bedroom to the living room. At night though they sleep in the bedroom with the puppies but they are not trapped with them.

so i tried the whole let them self soothe....yeah it didnt work they whined for a whole hour so i gave in and slept on the floor with them. They quieted down right away snuggled in and went to sleep...haha anyway another question aside from seperating mom how do you keep her from eating their puppy mush? Bella wolfs it down before the puppies get a chance to think about eating it haha i usually leave her out when i feed them but i work during the day and its hard to leave the mush down because i know bella will eat it all!

It sounds like the puppies have you trained good.....ha, ha. All kidding aside, just take some dry puppy food, put it in a blender and grind it until it is very fine. A six week old puppy will eat this very well and you don't have to worry about mom gobbling it up and it won't spoil. I recommend a good quality dry food like Canidae, Chicken Soup or Solid Gold puppy. You can still offer them the mush a couple times a day but most of my babies really like the dry food. Twice a day I give my the ground up dry food with a little canned Pedigree Lamb and Rice. At 6 weeks it does not have to be too mushy, just moist. Just curious, is there a reason the mom can't spend the night with them or be able to go to them when they need her? I know some moms totally loose interest early but I have been fortunate in that has not happened to me.

Bella slept with them until i put them in an expen at about 5 weeks. She cant get in and out of the pen herself and when she is in there she whines and whines. She doesnt like to be contained haha. She sleeps with me and the puppies are in their ex pen right outside my bedroom door. She does check on the through the night. When they whine i put her in with them for a bit and then she whines to get out.....its a whole long drawn out night....oh for one night of un interupted sleep! haha they def have me trained soooo well and wrapped around their little paws! i will get over it! i only have about 3 weeks left with them anyway until they go to their furever homes!

I know exactly what you are saying. The babies get upset when they see their mom because they are thinking food. I have just alway made it where the mom can get to the pups if she want to. Just try getting them to eat a good meal before bedtime and you might have to get up once during the night for mom to feed them and hopefully it won't take long for them to get used to sleeping alone. Are you leaving them some dry food to munch on? Mush gets cold and spoiled smelling after a short time. Puppies like the dry food better a lot of the times.

I agree. My girl could come and go however she wanted in the day. But at night she was placed in the crate with her pups so all in the house...including her pups, would get a good nights sleep. : )
