It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Placentas: to eat or not to eat? I have been reading everything I can get my hands on from the library and from the web. Question is: do you let the mother eat the placentas or not?? There seems to be a lot of opinions both ways and I was wondering what you all do. Some say that the mother needs the nutrition from eating the placentas and others say that it can upset her stomach and cause diarrhea; others say compromise and let her eat one or two and then remove the rest. I know that I can feed the mother can goats milk mixed with water,Karo and edd yolk to help build up her body again. And I was planning on that. Please give me your thoughts and opinions: Thanks Dawn

It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Forgot to add: I am sorry about any hard feeling that has risen because of Lacie's condition. I am greatful to everyone here for your help. I do reget that she is going to have puppies so young but I can not consider aborting unless the vet says it is life or death for her. I will keep a close eye on her and keep in close contact with the vet. I use two different vet, she will be seeing the one that is most experience with small breeds and has done delierey with yorkies before. Both natural and c-section. Thank you again for your advice: Dawn

| I compromise. I'll let mom eat 1, maybe 2 depending on litter size. It can certainly give diarrhea, but I think the nourishment is worth it. I don't want mine to eat too many though. |

| Ok I must have missed the original thread and dont have a clue what is going on but in order to answer the question that you actually asked.........I compromise and give the first one to her and take the rest. It does cut down on the diarrhea. |

Seriously, I let mine eat one, can't deal with the getting up 5 times a night to run her out with diarrea. I wish you the best of luck with your tiny one and I hope you seriously will consider spaying after this misfortunate misshap. | |

| Don't you think dogs are like humans, some are more susceptible when it comes to soft stools...My Molly had 7 pups, I tried to take most of the placentas from her so that she wouldn't eat too many, however, with clamping and cutting the cords, her delivering them quickly and taking care of a sickly little guy I only managed to get 2 of the 7. With that being said, We did not experience any diarrhea with her and all was well. Now she is a larger dog so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. So I think it depends on how sensitive your dogs stomach is. |

| It's very common for the females to experience digestive upset when eating them. Of course that may not be the case for all females as they are all different, but it does contribute to problems in some. |

| No table food for any of my dogs. Dry food, and dog biscuits we call cookies is it. I may have just gotten lucky with Molly who knows. |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Wanted to wish you luck! The momma of my Jasmine was only 3.5 pounds. She had 4 healthy beautiful puppies. When Jinny had her 3 I was only able to take one placenta away. It never upset her at all.

agreed a placenta and vanilla ice cream keeps the strength and sugar levels up during whelp and aids milk production.
