| free feeding when pg? when you girls are pg do you feed them on a fixed schedule or do you let them free feed. I have read that you need to make sure that the bitch doesn't get over weight as it makes delivery more difficult. The breeder that has the male that I bred abby to said to leave dry puppy food down at all times so they can eat when they are hungry. The books say only slightly increase the amount of food that they are eating. What do you guys do?

| I free feed and watch the gals weight. I don't add puppy kibble to their diet until the puppies bones have calcified so as not to encourage heavy bone. About 10 days before she's due I have the xray done and put them on puppy food. Do not increase calcuim intake until whelping as this increases the risk of eclampsia. Fresh air, water, and exercise are important for health as well.

| I free fed ALL my dogs and when I have a pregnat gal, I give her extra , usually a little wet puppy food twice a day. Then near the end, three times a day with a spoon of cottage cheese added to one meal a day. Then after whelping, I add whelping pudding to one meal a day. |

| That's awesome thanks for the info. I have started putting down just dry kibble so when she is hungry she can eat. When I feed her in the morning she doesn't seem that interested in what I give her and I don't want her to be hungry. When she wasn't pg I fed her in the morning and then in the late afternoon. So was concerned if I free fed her she would pig out. It doesn't look like she is going to do that, she eats a little her and a little there.
