Default Question about Kennel Name

What does it mean if you buy a puppy and the breeder wants you to keep her kennel name at the beginning of the AKC name....for example "XXXXX's Sweet Baby Jane". Can anyone tell me why?

It shows that the dog was a result of their breeding...even generations down the line. It's a common practice. No biggie, you can still pick your dog's name and call them that.

It's to keep track of their lines. Just put your name after it. It's one a lot.

Unless you are under a contract, you have no obligation to do that unless you want to. it does show your breeder respect tho.

It also shows that the breeder is proud of what they have produced and want their name on it. It's nice to know that the person who knows your pup best wants to claim the breeding of it to all.

Another thing to think about is if you show this dog, the breeders kennel name will be on it and nothing to indicate that the dog belongs to you and that you trained it unless you name it a certain way. For instance, my show girl is named Dee's Lil Diamond Jewel Theif. The Dee's Lil being me and the Diamond part because she came from Diamond/Diamondhead kennel. My breeder suggested that name. I had someone i bought a puppy from a year or so ago, try to pull a fast one on me , trying to make me use his "unregistered" kennel name by filling out the registration paper with his name on it. Since I planned on showing, I didn't want to do that. this person is a breeder and does not show. I called AKC, they looked it up and told me the kennel is not registered and to white it out and name the dog anything I wanted to. In shows, the winner dog always gets his breeder listed anyway but it is the name on the paper that really stands out.

I had a lady do that to me she now tells people that I was not proud of this dog is why she doesnt carry our name. Which is BS! She whited it out and she and I both know that!
Our contract was revised due to her doing that our dogs will carry Prestigeous as the first part of the name.
I am very proud of my dogs we produce and have worked very hard to get where we are.
I know some breeders register the dogs then when they place them they know exactly the registered name. I really don't blame.
The owners name is also listed in the show wins too.

Default kennel

I have to defend the breeder who put their kennel name on the papers and it was whited out....why use your kennel name on a dog you did not breed? When I came into Yorkies I was told to put my kennel name at the end ...putting it first, meant I bred the dog...

My prefix is Primrose..if I sold a dog to someone and put ..Primrose down, they can name the dog as they please..for example..
Primrose Lady at XXXXX (their kennel name) that means the dog was bred by me, but is owned by XXXXX..
This is JMO but I do not want my prefix at the beginning of any dog I did not breed..
But I guess it is apples and oranges, I always look to see who is the breeder, not the person on the end of the lead...

There was a little more to my story than what I told which is why I whited the other name out and I had not been told this until the puppy arrived from Texas. It wasn't part of the deal. I registered one of my whole litters because that was the only way I could legally get my name on their papers since I am not a registered kennel name. At the time I checked into registering my name, I was told you had to be a show kennel and of course with one itty bitty rising star, I am not a show kennel.LOL. My husband has a registered kennel name for his beagles but he has trialed and shown for forty years. he still lets peole choose the name they want when they buy puppies.

I have to agree with Yorkie Rose on this one. The prefix should be the breeders and the use of at or of can be used to identify the owner. The difficulty is not in the training of the dog but in the producing of consistant quality. The breeder should be honored for that.

Well, this person and I are friends and believe me, he does not people to know this dog came from his kennel. he hasn't turned out the way any of us thought and he didn't get at all upset with me about it so it has turned out alright. I had a contract on another breeder's dog (show breeder) and he was requiring me to use his kennel name, I had no problem at all with that. i ended up not getting the puppy tho because of an undescended testicle.

I haven't registered my kennel name as of yet and at $100. every 5 years I don't know that I will anytime soon. I wonder how much money AKC makes every year?

Generally, wouldn't that essentially be like trying to take credit for someone else's dog and acting as if you bred the dog yourself?
I can imagine in most cases (without special circumstances) that would seriously make the breeder mad!

I'm not sure how it works with dogs and AKC registration. I have my cat's CFA registration form in front of me (I need to send it in!) and it already has her breeder's cattery name in front of the boxes for me to write her name in. With cats and the CFA you don't have a choice but to have the cattery's name in front of it.

not in this case I am talking about. And as i said before, he is okay and is actually glad his name isn't on the paper. The parents of the dog I am speaking of have both since been altered. i guess each case is different. had I had a contract or even been made aware before the dog was in my possession, it would have been different. But, again, he is okay with it.
