It's something alot of breeders are now doing....however, a simple x-ray can tell you whether or not a dog has problems....

The OFA is documented prove from a vet that the dog is without problems.

Hi Mary

It was a conversation i got into with another Show person that thought the exrays i did on chaz and zoe and sassy were not good enough that i should have sent them in to ofa

I showed them the letter's that the
the vet's office had written that knees and hip's were in the normal range
and there was no sign of lp but they did not think it was good enough
so now i am wondering

Should I have the exrays re done and sent in my vet see's no need for it he said if he thought there was a problem than
he would advise it

But him and the other 2 in the office with him all looked at the exrays and were in agreement but this other show person does not show yorkies and is just a friend

You know what I have been
threw this year with other yorkies in my care so i am just wondering what to do

thanks in advance for the advice

From my understanding from my vet.....x-rays can show you any problems....grading LP is definately easy to do.....

The other Show person you say is a show person, but doesn't show yorkies, I don't understand that one.....

Donna,

You came to mind when I saw this question....just because way back when we both started out you were the first person that I had a conversation with that mentioned OFAing. The nice thing about it is even though x-rays can show you abnormalities...you can the OFA and CFA on their pedigree.

I know that when Charmer dislocated his hip.....and the fear was Leggs Perthes, it wasn't....I had him checked out thoroughly.

Rose,

I understand with what you've been through over the last year that you are a bit gun shy......trust your vet, he's been good and hasn't steared you wrong......

Well we were talking about genetic testing in the different breeds

and they wanted to know what we test for and we got into a heated discussion about lp and legg p and even hip dysplasia in yorkies and why we as responsible breeder's do not ofa

and I have had my dog's ex rayed but now i am re thinking about having it re done and certified

this was a discussion on another forum

I guess the best thing to do is go with your gut......all of these things have been found in the yorkie breed....as far as other yorkie breeder practices, be they well known or not....I don't know what they do.....we can only do what we know is the right thing to do......hiding our heads in the sand is not a thing that I recommend.....and I do know that having them x-rayed is not a guarantee that the dogs are not carriers of those dreaded things.....believe me when that DNA marker comes out for Shunt, I'll be the first one in line to have my dogs tested.

I do know that the Mother Club is conducting research in each of the areas that plague our breed. DNA markers have been identified for other breeds, but all DNA markers can not be used across the canine world.

I remember us having that conversation! Guess I'm not getting too old then LOL. Yes, I'm going to have Radar and now my little girl OFA'd. I won't be getting Tucker or Brookie done because they are fixed and so is Harvey. I won't be using anything out of them and all the siblings out of Brookie is spayed or neutered now. Tucker I never used so I will just have Radar and Cammie and now my little Molly when she's of age.

Donna

Well i just got off the phone with my vet and she is going to submitt
chaz's exray and her finding of lp and than we will go threw the girl's
we already have there ex-rays so we are one step ahead

it is just getting them all submitted and you are right there is no guarentee they are not carriers only keeping there pups and having them done will tell the true story

so I am keeping one out of sassy and zoe to test them when they get old enough and i agree with you Mary i wish there was alot more dna markers we could do because I would be in line also

I really do not want to put anyone threw the up's and down's I have been threw this year with certain dog's no matter what venue my dog's go
i want to do what is wright it may cost a little more with all the genetic testing But i feel i need to know my dog's are sound

And this may not be right for everyone but it is what I feel I need to do for me and I know I could be headed for a few more let down's when I do this

I am in total agreement with OFAing. I had no idea that my champion had a problem until I had her checked out to breed. Her x-rays confirmed hip dysplasia in both hips, so there was no need to OFA. She has not and never will be bred. Since there is no DNA marker for these types of problems I would be very careful in checking out pedigrees of other dogs before using them in my breeding program as well as my own dogs before breeding. An OFA certification is about as good as it gets for now
