Question Placing a Female in Pet Home, need opinions please

OK, darn I have a headache from this. I am looking for a pet home for our 2 yr old female. Because of her skin condition spaying her before placing her is not an option right now. I have decided to place her with an adoption agreement, originally I wasnt going to provide registration papers at all but thought it would be nice of me to consider once proof of spay was received. I have someone interested, from the beginning I told her she would get no papers at this time. So she tried again and says can we reconsider because of proof of ownership. I turned around and told her, her proof of ownership would be the adoption form. She said fine, not a problem. A week has passed with us chatting, all was well until today before we planned for her to pick her up. Once again, this time can I give her a copy of her AKC. After much thinking I said no, no copy, no original. I did offer she could see them and gave her the AKC#. I have explained my thoughts on this, I dont see why they are necessary when you are adopting a dog to a pet home. Am i missing something??

You could give a copy with the date of registration marked out so you are unable to use it to register any dogs by her. That date is all people need to register litters of puppies. I would think that would be fine?? That is what I would do until proof of spay is done. Unless you don't feel right about that either. You are the seller after all!!

Below is some of what she wrote on the 2nd reason why she wants a copy..........

The reason we asked for a copy was for the vet. He wants to check back through her bloodline to see if the skin problem she is having is heriditary. It will give him a much better idea of how to treat her if he knows if this something she inheridited from her mother or if she developed this on her own. It will also show that if this is a heriditary condition we can contact the AKC and stop the breeding from her mother so that no other puppy has to go through this. As you have done we have asked other people too, including the AKC and they say we should be leary of people who will not give up the papers, because the papers actually belong to the dog not the owner.

I would have reservations about letting this person adopt my girl. Dogs are adopted out all the time without papers so that should not be a red flag to anyone. Once the vet finds out what the condition is what does it matter if it's inherited or developed, shouldn't it just be treated for what it is? I wouldn't trust the situation...especially since you are letting your female go un-spayed.

She wouldn't need the dogs papers to trace her lineage, a copy of the pedigree should be enough. Alot of breeders don't sign over the papers until proof of spay. I don't know why this woman is so troubled by it.

Just remember , you are offering the dog for adoption , you get to do things your way. If someone wants papers, when you told them no to begin with, Red flags should be going up for you.

AKC , does not care about her skin condition and will not pull her mother from a breeding program, and as far as I know vets do not know enough about a yorkie pedigree to help you out there either, sounds like a bunch of bull to me.

You need to protect your girl , I have never heard of any vet that would not spay a dog with a skin condition either....

Sounds strange to me.

I don't know where you are located in PA - But I have a friend who lives in Northern NJ (along Rte. 80) and we have been searching and searching for a female for her.

My friends name is Patty and she is over 50. She is single and her adult daughter lives with her. They have a bird and a cat. They have a had few pets over the years, but have all passed on.

Her last dog was a Maltese and just recently passed away. It took a while but Patty is finally ready to open her home again. AKC paper do not matter to her at all. And I can guarantee you 100% that she would have her spayed, no doubt about that. She has a great relationship with her Vet.

Anyway, if you are still looking for a home for your female and think Patty would be a good candidate, please PM and I will give you Patty's contact information so you can speak with her further.

Thanks!

from a person who has no desire to ever breed my dog, papers are really not necessary. If she really has no intentions of breeding her then why is she so hooked on getting her papers? Because she knows she can ask more money for the pups if they are registered...I could be wrong

I agree.

There is no need for the papers if you don't want to breed (IMO). It sounds funny to me that this person keeps bringing it up when you've told her that she can't have the papers...
