| Hopeless for a puppy in NYC... My monkey tooshie will be 2 in April and for her bday i want to surprise her with a sister. Sadly I found this site after I had already brought her home from a pet store and even though she is the love of my life and i would never change a thing, she came home very sick and wound up costing me several thousand to keep alive in the first few months. There is however, one petstore by me that has pertty good reviews and claim to get their dogs from private breeders. They ONLY sell small breed puppies and no other pets or supplies. I'm just concerened that if one of them is sick, all the rest would pick it up because they are in such close quarters. Dont know what to think about this... I have been looking for breeders in my area but i am convinced they have all gone insane!! I wouldnt have a pup shipped so i want a breeder thats within a 4 or 5 hour drive of Brooklyn NY. The only pups I am finding are "MICRO MINI's" or something to that effect and cost up to $7,000. I think that is just PSYCHOTIC...who comes up with these prices???/ My Chewy was 1200 and I want to stay in that area. Anyone around me have any advice or know any good breeders??? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks |

| Pet shopes get their puppies from puppy mills. Of course many will say they get their puppies from local breeders. That's a common lie. Who would want to buy a puppy from a pet store if they knew the truth? I know many people who have been told their pet shop puppy came from a local breeder only to find out they really came from a mill in Missouri or Oklahoma after they got the papers. Please don't buy another pet store puppy. You are only asking for more heartache and big vet bills. Remember just because a puppy is healthy for the first few years doesn't mean they will stay healthy. Poorly bred dogs carry genetic "time bombs" that often don't go off for many years. You may have to change your mind about having a puppy shipped from a reputable breeder. Instead of flying in cargo, a great alternative is having it carried on board. I know several people on another forum I belong to have used this option to bring their new puppy home. Or you can fly yourself to get your puppy. |

| Keep looking on the for sale forums. It's not bad shipping your baby if you go and pick them up. This way you can ride with them and comfort them.

| I would love to go and pick the pup up from a reputable breader but i wouldnt be able to afford a round trip flight right now. It would be a few extra thousand which would be the same as buying from a breeder around here.\ Im curious if anyone knows a good breeder around here that isnt charging an arm and a leg. This guy on the street told me that he wants to buy a dog like mine but he wants a really small one and the breeder he found charges more than he is selling his car for. I think its just sad! |

Donating YT 7000 Club Member | aw I'm sorry for your loss. Welcome to YT! I would suggest that you keep looking around these forums. Do you definetly want a puppy? Because you could probably find an adult dog (2+ years) for a less price than you would have to pay for a puppy. You might also try some rescues likes the ASPCA or Petfinder.com. Best of luck! I hope you stick around.

Either way...yes Im looking for a puppy...about 12 weeks would be ideal. I like the idea of raising it myself.

| i forgot to say this, but if you don't mind having them shipped, you can get them from really good breeders. there is a breeder whose website is yorkieshowdogs.com, and i've heard lots of good things about her. i'll probsably get my next yorkie from her. on her website she has a boy listed for $1000

| I know exactly what you are going through I live in Queens ny and when my sister was looking for a puppy there were no breeders out here. We went to Ohio to pick up her baby off of wonderful breeder on YT. It was a long long day actually took 4 different planes in a 5 hour time frame and we both paid airfare round trip (I went just to be there to help her and to meet Macy ) She has been with my sis for about 2 months and it was the best decision we made! Please dont buy from a pet shop, I know its hard when you walk in and see all those precious babies.

| I emailed the breeder in NJ but looking at his site makes me think the pups will be very expensive. There are a lot of show dogs. Thanks for the info...i hope im wrong about him. I think I may have to fly out to pick up a pup but i would like to avoid that. I will use the next few months to try and find a good breeder in the NY/NJ/PA area. |

You don't have to spend thousands to pick a puppy up. As I said in my earlier post, there are people who will transport your puppy for you for about $300. We have a Delta stewardess on another forum who does that regularly.
