| Some advice needed. I really don't know where to start... Let's see....My family and I have stayed in contact with the breeder from whom we got Chuy, so much so that my hubby is getting his website updated (the woman doing it died) and he's teaching me things about breeding and such. Well, Kenneth (the breeder) has had a huge family emergency pop up, and he's had to leave town. His mother (with 40 years of breeding experience herself) is there with the dogs, but she is homebound. He's asked me to help her out as she's got a litter of Morkies just about ready for their forever homes, and a litter of Yorkies due December 2-5 (somewhere in there). God willing, he'll be home by then. Until, though, he gave me some quick instructions, but I'm curious as to how to handle things. How are forever homes found? I mean, I kinda stumbled on him two years ago, but he has a new website addy. Is there a general location you guys advertise? Newpapers? Magazines? What do you look for on adoption applications? What type of questions do you ask people interested in your babies? I want to get into breeding myself in a couple years, but as I don't even have a female, I can only read on the process. Placement was not something I was planning on learning quite this early, lol. I sorta feel as though I've bitten off more than I can chew. I mean, I want to help out, and as his mom is older, I know she needs all the help she can get, but I don't want to do the wrong thing. Does that make sense? Perhaps I am rambling, but if you guys can offer any advice, please, let me know.

| If his mother has 40+ years experience, then she should be able to take care of all of that and guide you...? You just kind of have to go with your gut with alot of it. I realize that emergencies come up, but I can't imagine someone just leaving you to run the show like that. (nothing against you) Screening potential homes can be quite time consuming, you may want to do in-home visits, have the new owners visit the pups to bond with them first, get references from a vet they've used before. Did the guy leave you any kind of criteria that he uses normally when placing them? |

| She will be able to guide me, and I'm not running the show, but his mother is homebound. Completely. She is not internet savvy, so that is the main aspect that I am assisting her with.

| Oh...gotcha! I know that some breeders have questionaires that they have filled out, first and certain requirements for the prospective new homes. (No children, no big dogs, must not be gone away during the day, etc) I've never had to advertise in a mag or paper as I've had a waiting list to fill... It's really kind of tricky since they are someone else's...I would hate to think that you did something the breeder wasn't happy with and he blamed you when he got back. I would try to see if you can compile a list of specific questions and ask him (or his mom) for some more direction. |

| That was my plan, but I wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything. Thanks! I appreciate the help.

| puppies Ask the breeder how they placed their pups in the past? Someone with 40 yrs in a breed should have a waiting list or at least weekly contacts by phone, vet, friends, family and previous buyers referring buyers to them...if not I would be careful. YOU must talk to the son before selling anything..and get everything in writing..better yet. I would call him and tell him you can help his mother, but not sell his pups unless he finds the approved hoems....do you know the doors of trouble you can open...say someone gets a sick or genetically unsound pup. They call in 2 weeks wanting their money back, you give it and the son wants it from you because he does not agree the pup was ill or whatever..what if someone gives you a bad check? What is someone has any number of problems and calls you day and night..they are not your puppies and it can get tricky. PS...I DO NOT care what kind of emergancy a breeder has..you can not go off and leave these things to others...you must stay in daily communication.. who goes off and leaves a housebound mother with a pile of dogs anyway..and ones having puppies?? As I said, I am ASSISTING her with most of the transactions, but I will help her find a buyer if one falls through for the morkies. It's not like I am taking over and running his kennel while he is gone. His brother is there to help with feeding and bathing the pups, and with anything his mother might need, and I will go and take the newborns to the vet after they are born. As for him having to leave...Were my human child in danger as is the case here, I would be hard pressed to not do the exact same thing as he. I love Chuy with all my heart, and I consider him my first born, but if Donovan (my human son) were in the hospital far away, I would leave Chuy in a second to go to him. That is why I am trying to help him. I would hope for the same were I in his situation.
