Our Monday Night Nightmare!

So tonight we went on our usual walk with the babies, only tonight was a little different..

To put it mildly, when we got home...it was a total NIGHTMARE. When we walked in the door, I had Tatum in my arms because she was tired from walking so I picked her up and held her right before we go back to the house. Well, before putting her down so that she could get a drink of water, I noticed that she had GOBS...and I do mean GOBS of sticker burs ALL through her hair. Let me tell you, I nearly died when I saw this.

Mind you, Tatum is in a FULL "show coat" now (and by saying that I am just describing the length of her hair) - so you can just imagine how fun it was going to be for me to get all of these things out

So then hubby looks at Stedman and guess what....yep! He has them too. FUN! At this point, I pretty much just want to cry.

So hubby takes Stedman and I take Tatum and we proceed to the couch so that we can sit down with them in our laps and work at getting all of this CRAP out of their hair!! Yeah....it only took us about an hour. UGH!!!!!!!!!!!

I counted exactly 150 sticker burs in total, not to mention all of the little twigs and pieces of grass that we pulled off of them also. We picked each and every single sticker bur out with our fingers except for one that was so stuck in all of Tatum's hair by one of her paws that I literally had to cut it out with a pair of scissors.

THIS WAS A NIGHTMARE!

I don't know where on earth we are going to walk them now because I have NO idea which yard all this stuff came from and...LOL...I can PROMISE you that I won't be doing this again

Here are pictures of what came out of the babies hair. If you can just *imagine* picking each and every single one of these out of a Yorkie that has show dog length hair....well, to put it mildly, IT SUCKS!!!

Tatum was very cooperative (as she always is) and just stood there and let me do it but they were still NOT easy AT ALL to get out. Hubby had a TIME with Stedman as he is always soo squirmy and didn't want hubby messing with him trying to get all the burs out.

OMG! Sigh...what a night.

Dang! You weren't kidding when you said there were GOBS and GOBS of these prickly things! And I thought we were the only ones that had them here in FL.

I feel your pain! I had an American Eskimo dog for 16 years and he had a very thick coat and he got the stickers one time, I felt like shaving him down! It was awful!

OMG! That is a lot of work. Good thing they have your hubby and you to take such good care of them. One time Pinky got stuck in the bushes and could not move and I had to literally cut her out of there.

Oh, how awful; those darn things blow in the wind, so you have to be extra careful if it's been windy. On the plant, they look kind of pretty, a willowy type of grass/flower, but the head of it dries up and turns to hundreds of stickers that blow all over the place. Glad your babies are ok.

I had the same problem with Max, but I know exactly where he got them from, we don't "visit" that neighbor anymore

oh no!!! That is horrible. That happened to me last year with both Benji and Bella. They were sooo matted in their coats that I couldn't get a lot of them out so I tried making their hair wet. BAD IDEA....hehe. We finally decided to keep them both shorter after that one. We get them in our back yard and Benji always finds them. I pick them out every time he comes inside. I have no idea how to get rid of them. We have even pulled them out of our yard and they come back.

WOW...I see I am not the only one who spends her night picking away at sticker burrs. That is exactly what my coffee table looks like when I am finished: a pile of burrs and hair. Poor babies. Abbey likes to bite me as I pull them out so that makes it twice as fun!! Did you read the thread I made about this...one of the best suggestions was to use spray on conditioner to ease them out. I am def going to try that.

I thought my yorkie was the odd one to get these same ball stickers stuck on her. It happened when we first got her and she gave us quite a scare for she had swallowed some and made it hard for her to breathe. We took her to the vet to get x-rays but there wasn't much that we could have done. For two days she was weezing and breathing odd and finally she pooped out a bunch of those sticky balls.
I was so gratefull and was extra careful when we walked her out side to make sure this wouldn't happen again.

Oh my goodness! What a nightmare! Glad you all made it through without too much cutting. I hate those things.

Here in CA we have some called Foxtails, which burrow into the pet...eyes, ears, tummy, legs, feet....anywhere! If not caught in time they require surgical removal.

I am glad you got everything 'all worked out'....

Oh my goodness! They were little bur vacuum cleaners!!

This happened once to Pippa (during our nightmare the time she got out when we were at work and was gone for about 24 hours). She must have found a patch of burs to sleep in or something because when I got her back she was covered in them. But let me tell you, I was crying tears of joy while pulling them off one at a time!
