WHY did I teach him Speak? and other training mistakes.

I admit I saw this one coming. I think it's sooooooo cute when dogs speak on cue, and I also loved the idea of teaching Thor to Whisper.

Well, Thor can Speak on cue, if he's in the mood. He doesn't seem to quite totally get it, and I have held off on trying to teach Whisper until Speak is rock solid. I've also taught him Quiet, which he knows, and obeys if he doesn't think there's something he needs to bark about.

Skateboards: From Intense Dislike to Vocal Disapproval

Thor continues to get desensitized to skate boards. He can actually sit and stay Quiet (in between barking fits) while they go by now. He gets excited when we go to the skate park now because he knows he's getting jerky. I think he'll be able to watch them go by without flicking a whisker after maybe another dozen sessions. Maybe fewer!

Thor is getting even better around skateboards! Now they can roll maybe thirty feet away from him, and while he definitely notices the sound, he's happy to focus on me and get treats instead. That may not sound like much, but when we started, he would go nuts if they were within even a hundred feet of him.

Twenty is still way too close - he freaks out at cute little kids on scooters who pass by. But it's a big relief to see that it's starting to work. Maybe I should start working...

Thor and skateboards: from archenemies to simple hatred

Yay! Thor has made a teensy, tiny amount of progress with skateboards. He still becomes enraged around them, but before he would ignore me on his kamikaze missions, whereas now he will actually return to me if called. Also, if I have a really, really, really tasty treat in my hand, he will Sit and eat it in between barks.

I've been taking him to a local skate spot near my office every week or so, and trying to desensitize him to the noise for 5-10 minutes at a time. I had felt last...

Yep, he knows Bang!

He is such a good little doggie. Now any time I am mad at him, I can just "shoot" him to express my angst.

He's doing pretty well with Speak, though he won't do it twice in a row. I'm surprised it's taking him this long to pick up, though maybe he's a little confused as to why I shook pennies at him for barking last month, and this month I'm giving him treats. He knows he's supposed to make a noise, but it varies from his piercing little high volume...
