Dog time doesn't feel like work

Is it just me, or does the time we spend with our dogs or FOR our dogs not wear us out as much as other weekly chores?

I've had a full plate at work for months now, and every extra hour wears me down. But in my free time, any time spent on the dogs feels like recreation. It relaxes me.

I'm not just talking about quality time like walks. Last week, I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork, attend a 2-hour orientation and get bloodwork done at the hospital so Eddie can...

Close call at the park today

Our neighborhood park almost never has anyone in it in the mornings, and I feel comfortable letting my guys walk off leash. That's the main reason I've put Eddie through so many obedience classes. I wanted him to be able to walk off leash when I deem it safe. Jack is no problem. He's never more than a couple feet away and never wanders. Rusty is a bit more adventuresome, but his "come" is generally good.

Today, the downside of my love of unleashed walks reared its ugly head....

Poor scared boy

Eddie has been behaving strangely lately. Real clingy. Instead of sneaking off to a back room to take a nap like he usually does, he'll lie at my feet or hop up on my lap. He always snuggles with his mama, but even she's noticed that he's been more affectionate.

Of course, I always panic. I figured he was getting sick. I'd been putting off an appointment to get his runny eyes checked, so I did that right away. He's got some ointment to put in them, and they seem to be getting better....

Sometimes I wonder if the individual attention I give my boys is too much. I'm not going to change anything, but I just wonder.

I've noticed they don't play amongst themselves without my direction. Oh, Jack and Rusty will lie together, but they don't play. And Eddie rarely tries to play with Rusty or Jack. It's beneath his alphaness. As for Rusty or Jack trying to initiate a game with Eddie, they wouldn't dare. He's got attitude.

But they play well together with supervision....

I hate fireworks

I love all my dogs with all my heart, but Eddie, my first Yorkie, is special. He's the smartest dog I've ever owned, and we're so close we can practically read each other's minds.

I would do anything for Eddie.

But I can't take away his fear of fireworks. He's always been terrified of them, but it became a huge problem when he was about 1 and escaped from the dogsitter on the Fourth of July. He roamed the neighborhood (or hid) while fireworks were being shot off constantly....
