| This New Jersey Bill will affect all breeders selling into and out of new jersey Senator Lesniak is attempting to take away NJ voters rights to purchase a puppy or kitten from a reliable source and pushing citizens to obtain their next pet from shelter or rescue sources only! Bill #S63 bans the sale of puppies and kittens from licensed pet shops AND bans all breeders and buyers from selling or purchasing their pet from anyone outside of the state of NJ via online transactions, face to face transactions only! While everyone supports shelter animals and adoptions, to ban everyone in the entire state of their CHOICE of whether to adopt or shop, or where to purchase a quality bred puppy or kitten is not the American way. Here is the meat and potatoes of this bill if it passes: 1. Want to purchase your next puppy or kitten from a wonderful, conscientious breeder in California? Sorry, Lesniak says you won’t be able to unless you are willing to fly or drive to California and do a “face to face transaction”! No Internet sales are allowed! 2. Are you a reputable breeder in NJ and have found some wonderful homes for your upcoming litter but they live in other states? Sorry, unless those wonderful homes are willing to come directly to you and do a face to face transaction, you are limited to finding homes for your babies only in the local area! 3. Are you a breeder in or out of the state of NJ that buys and/or sells puppies/kittens to other breeders to diversify/improve your breeding line? You will no longer be able to have that great working relationship to better your breed because no sales in or out of the state of NJ will be allowed unless they are IN PERSON transactions!!! 4. Do you want to find a good, local pet shop with puppies/kittens available from reputable sources? There are NONE, because all pet stores are banned from selling puppies/kittens from ANY source other than a shelter or rescue group! THINK about what that means… Suppose you want to buy a Siamese kitten or a Collie puppy and there are no breeders or available litters within driving distance of NJ, Senator Lesniak says: “tough” you can’t have the puppy or kitten of your choice from a reputable breeder of your choice; go adopt a shelter dog/cat instead! What if you do the research and find out that the type of puppy or kitten you want from a reputable breeder is only available in Nebraska? Unless you want to fork over the extra money to fly out to Nebraska to do an “in person transaction”, you are out of luck, go adopt a shelter or rescue pet. Want to purchase your next puppy or kitten from a pet shop? Nope, the only animals that will be found now at pet shops will be shelters animals for adoption. And what happened to all the health warrantees that pet shops were previously required to offer to protect purchasers? Well Shelters and Rescues are EXEMPT from offering even the most basic of background information or warrantees to say that the adopted pet is healthy! And the most important thing to remember here folks: Contrary to what Lesniak says, that he is pushing this bill to help reduce homeless pets, there will always be plenty of shelter/rescue pets available because there are ZERO regulations preventing them from being imported from elsewhere and there are ZERO regulations requiring shelters or rescue groups to provide adopters with even the most basic of background information or warrantees to say that the adopted pet is healthy! | great post! This whole animal rights movement has the ultimate goal of ending pet ownership. Right now they're making great progress in ending pure bred dog breeding. I can only hope those of you who enjoy your pure bred dogs will take an interest and fight this kind of legislation that will eventually prevent you from obtaining a pure bred dog. Forget the distinction between pet store, backyard breeder or responsible breeder. Your choice is being taken away from you! NOTE: years before I ever thought of becoming a breeder I purchased a Maltese and a Yorkie from pet stores. Though not the most beautiful examples of their breeds, they were reasonably healthy and made great pets. I once had a trusted veterinarian who owned a pet store that sold puppies. I don't think it's the worst thing that can happen to the breed that puppies are sold in pet stores. The worst thing will be when nobody is allowed to breed them any more.

| The "forces that are behind this" have been behind this for at almost 40 years.,...I have been actively fighting this all during that length of time, really getting active during the '80's-2000 in our State capitol, submitting propositions and proposals for alternative plans, joining dog clubs all over the country, trying to fight this action as it rears it's ugly head all across the country....people have no idea what is going on behind the scenes....very little of it is good for people trying to purchase happy, well adjusted, well bred, healthy pets from a breeder ANYWHERE in the world. Radicals are continously, slowly, quietly, steadidly, chipping away at YOUR right to purchase any puppy you want. They are trying to shut down even reputable breeders, and this "law", Bill S63, is just the beginning, this is the foot in the door, the camels nose under the tent, the crack in the dam. Any of you out there that have a dog, better hope it is going to live the next 20 years, because by then, you will not be able to buy a dog except from a shelter, and they will be steadily chipping away at dissolution of that right. You must all be aware that these are the same people that want to give animals the right to have legal representation in our court system, so that animals can sue humans for infringing on their "animal rights, to co-exist with humans, as equals and partners"..... They want a beef steer to be able to sue because it does not agree with the plan to feed the population meat. My son is halfway through 40 years of age, so he may not be affected too much....but my cousin's 4-10 year old grand children will live in a time when it will eventually be illegal to even own an animal, let alone slaughter one for food. It may sound out outrageous and totally like something dreamed up by some nut straight out of a looney bin, but it is coming..... Read up on Cass Sunstein...... | Wow this angered me - not just as a Yorkie mama but as a Jersey resident. I have been searching for a reputable breeder for weeks now in my area and to see this going on just makes livid! I am sick and tired of being put down because I want a purebred pup. It seems everyone consistently wants to make me feel this incredible guilt that I'm not going to the shelter. I am befuddled as to why I would have to explain this to anyone, ESPECIALLY those who aren't paying my bills! I signed this and I'm sharing it. How utterly ridiculous that these elected officials have nothing better to do in this state where so many are struggling with other issues that they would focus on this! Thank you for bringing this to our attention, I'm going to email this idiot next. PS I have no issues with shelters and rescues, my only issues are with puppy mills and non responsible owners who purchase these dogs or think it's OK to surrender them when they're lifestyle changes! I'm so flipping angry right now. |

| Ugh this is ridiculous. I've had so many people try to guilt me in public over buying Lola, without even asking where I got her. I did buy her from a breeder and that's none of their business. I'm sorry but I will never own a bully breed and that's basically all the shelters have, if they get anything else it gets adopted very quickly. Bully breeds can be very nice dogs, but I'm not interested in a dog that can overpower me and I don't like shedding. I thought pet stores could only have rescue dogs already, that's what a pet store told me, they used to have pure breds and designer mixes (ugh), now they have rescues. |

| People had better get educated in political activism and learn how to fight this idea that is spreading.......or in a few short years, no one will be able to go to a specific breeder for a puppy.....you will only be able to sneak and buy questionable dogs out of the trunk of cars or from boxes outside grocery stores....Legit, healthy, breeder bred dogs from reputable breeders, will be forbiden....and they are aiming for the day when you will not even be able to own an animal....that animal has all the same rights that YOU do and as YOU can not be owned, neither can an animal....people had better get active and start the fight to prevent this....it is coming.... |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Late to the topic (yet again). Deja vu just finished with a Boston thread where in they banned puppy sales in pet stores there. Oh and btw they banned them in Mississauga Ontario too.... Etobicoke is looking at it And just in case you think we have a lot of surrendered or stray dogs here - last lookie lou at GTA shelters the most I found up for adoption in any one shelter was *GASP* wait for it. FIVE dogs yuppers just 5. When we allow the Quebec rescues in we get a big bump but then they are fairly quickly adopted - oh yes except for bully breeds - black dogs particularly large black dogs. In all my years working and travelling into and out of downtown Toronto I saw exactly one stray female who had had a litter she was rescued by me - taken to the vet that morning - and I spent a few hours trying to find her litter. I was successful and all the pups saw the vet that afternoon.... Having shelters or rescues offer even a rudimentary health warranty will effectively put them out of business... Watch for what you might agitate for. This state is mimicking the relatively recent APHIS rules that we fought so hard against and lost. Must meet in person = etc etc. Going to the breeders site - might just be effective - but if a con game is going on then smart folks who are only in it for the money will figure out a dozen ways to dazzle the would be purchaser. In this day n age of technology surely we can Skype or send videos of our environs - maybe even get audited by some sort of accredited auditor as to our breeding home. The public needs to wrap their head around a truth. If we want purebred dogs that are well bred we have to stand up for the rights of breeders to breed them. And while I don't like sales in pet stores - I don't make the mistake that those pups always come from puppy mills. Block the puppy mills at the source - close them down.
