| Thank you so very much. I had been reading a thread about donations and they too suggested it is better to give to a local shelter. It is so sad when this and other animal rights groups take advantage of our compassion to line their own pockets and/or further their personal agendas and ignore the plight of the very animals they are supposed to support. I hope that this is the first step in accountability for these "charities" |

| Thanks for posting. Much better to give to local shelter or rescue group. I prefer to give to rescue group as they rely solely on donations. Most local shelters do get some tax money - ours gets the money from the license tags.

| Yes, hopefully more people will become aware and donate to their local shelters and rescues. It's sad how many people have been deceived.

| That's terrible. You think you are making a donation to help and hardly anything goes to help, it's all administrative costs. |

| Does anyone know about the ASPCA? I've been donating to them for years and would like to know of the situation is the same as the Humane Society. |

| Maybe I should post this in the General section so many more would actually see this and made aware. A lot of people don't make it down this far..

| Thanks so much for posting this, and I agree you should post this in the General forum as well. My family has stopped donating to them because of this issue. |

Charity Review of American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Only 2% for administrative costs. I think that is pretty good for a charity! . Here is a site listing programs & services: ASPCA | Programs & Services

| Not meaning to hijack this thread, but since the question was asked, here's my opinion on the ASPCA. I have been thoroughly NOT impressed with the ASPCA since finding out about Oreo. Oreo is a dog the ASPCA put down after nursing her back to health. This was due to her 'showing aggression' after temperament tests. If you want to know more about this, here's the thread.... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ani...-new-york.html Here's a little on Oreo's story from the thread "In New York City, a one-year old dog named Oreo was intentionally thrown off a sixth floor Brooklyn roof top by her abuser. Oreo sustained two broken legs and a fractured rib. Oreo also appears to have been beaten in the past—several of the neighbors in the building where Oreo lived reported hearing the sounds of the dog being hit. The ASPCA nursed her back to health and arrested the perpetrator. They also dubbed her the “miracle dog.” The miracle was short-lived. According to the ASPCA, when Oreo recovered from her injuries, she started to show aggression. After a series of temperament tests, the ASPCA made the decision to kill her. The New York Times reported the story the day before Oreo’s scheduled execution. A sanctuary in New York offered to take Oreo, explaining that they had experience rehabilitating dogs deemed aggressive and offering her lifetime care, including plenty of socialization and walks if the rehabilitation was not successful. They were ignored, hung up on and lied to. And the ASPCA chose to kill the dog instead. That afternoon, Oreo laid dead, the victim not of her former abuser, but of an overdose of poison from a bottle marked “Fatal-Plus,” at the hands of a shelter bureaucrat." here's some more on the story... The meaning of Oreo - San Francisco animal shelters | Examiner.com ASPCA was right to euthanize Oreo, the pit bull that survived a six-story fall, says PETA | L.A. Unleashed | Los Angeles Times Photo of Oreo minutes before being killed by ASPCA...vicious dog, huh .

On a local note, my area shelter, HSSM, is not suffering from lack of funds, gets a 4 star rating from Charity Navigator and, on review, looks to be doing so many things right. They are still killing about 50% of all animals received, however. My point? I think the proof is in how the animals fare under these groups...not how the numbers look on paper. I have to wonder just how things would be if the the money received by the big 3 (HSUS, ASPCA and PETA) were instead donated to local and no-kill groups that are more focused on actually reducing the number of animals killed rather than fund raising and having an impressive annual report.
