Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Eddie got his Nosework 2 title today! OK, even I'm feeling like this is a shameless brag, but if you can't do that on YorkieTalk where people love their Yorkies as much as I do mine, where can you do it? Eddie got his Nosework 2 title today, something I thought was pretty much impossible for a short-nosed toy breed at one time. He had to search a largish exterior setting and find two hidden odors, which were Q-tips exposed to either birch or anise. Then he had to search 4 vehicles and find one of the odors on one. In the afternoon, he had to search a room with about 20 containers -- everything from a paint can with a muffin in to suitcases with toys in them and even a cooler -- and find 2 with odor. Lastly, he had to search 2 different interiors and find 1 hidden odor in each of them. And he had 3 minutes to complete each task. Well, he found all 7 hides -- the longest of his searches taking just 1 minute, 48 seconds for 2 -- and he was one of 14 dogs today to title out of the 30 or so of multiple breeds that competed. In doing so, he became the third Yorkie in the country to get an NW2 title. To put it in perspective, here are the top 6 AKC breeds followed by their nosework statistics. Top 6 Most Popular Breeds in the U.S. as ranked by American Kennel Club in 2014 1. Labrador Retriever 2. German Shepherd 3. Golden Retriever 4. Bulldog 5. Beagle 6. Yorkshire Terrier Number of Nosework 1 and 2 Titles by those breeds Labrador Retriever NW1: 283 NW2: 142 German Shepherd NW1: 268 NW2: 111 Golden Retriever NW1: 196 NW2: 86 Bulldog NW1: 3 NW2: 2 Yorkshire Terrier NW1: 8 NW2: 3 Next goal for Eddie: NW3, with only 1 Yorkie in the country having achieved!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Congratulations Eddie and Mike. That says a lot about you and your training ability, I can't imagine how hard that was, he must be a very disciplined little guy, but I think I remember you saying he also passed a test to become some type of certified therapy dog? I'll bet Eddie just loves working with you.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Thanks for the kind words, everyone. Just waking up and making sure it all wasn't a dream! Interestingly, 99 percent of the training that goes on in Nosework is Eddie training me! Dogs are born master sniffers! Once he learned what I wanted him to find, I just had to get out of his way and let him do his job! I have to help him by approaching areas from the right wind direction, etc., but my main job is to pay attention to him and relay that information to the judges. What it has involved is practice, and I can count on two hands the number of days we haven't practiced when I wasn't out of town since we started in 2009. In fact, we do it mostly as a fun activity for the dogs, like hiking or fetching a ball. We trial less than once a year, and this was Eddie's fourth trial. Jillie has only trialed once but has a perfect winning percentage and is an NW1 dog. And yes, both Eddie and Jillie are registered therapy dogs with Pet Partners

| Any updates? I see this is an older thread, but I would be interested in hearing how Eddie is doing? Today I was just talking to someone at nosework class, and I told her I was getting a yorkie mix puppy. She raved about the last yorkie she watched at a trial. I can't wait to see if mine will be interested. It is the most fun ever. Wonderful for you and Eddie! |

Nosework to us has become more of a way of life. We play every day on our walks and every night when I get home from work. We break a lot of "rules" that serious competitors warn you not to do -- I have two dogs search for the same odor at the same time around the house, etc. -- but we do it just for fun. Some people toss balls for their dogs, we play nosework. Anyhow, Eddie entered a Nosework 3 trial. Passing would have made him the second Yorkie in the country to have an NW3. The tough part about NW3 is they can hide up to 3 odors in a room, and the handler doesn't know how many have been hidden. We have to shout "Finish" before the time expires and hope we've found all the odors. Eddie successfully found all the odors in 3 of the 4 elements (vehicle search, container search and exterior search). We failed on a very difficult indoor search. Two odors were hidden in one odd room that was basically a hallway and three tiny rooms. He only alerted on one of the odors. In the second room, two odors were hidden and he found both. He came sooooo close but didn't title. I have no doubt he could pass, but my schedule hasn't allowed us to attend another trial. My other Yorkie has her NW1 and failed badly on trying to get her NW2. Again, the failing is all my fault for not taking our training more seriously. Good luck, and let me know if you title!
