| AKC puppy class I signed my Lola Bear up for the puppy 4-6 month competition and I really just need to know what to expect. The show coordinator was not very helpful. I've never showed a dog before and I need as much help and advice as possible!! |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | For new exhibitors there is usually a class you can enter. But in the baby puppy class the judges should be very very helpful to you. Get the judging schedule (usually available one week or so after the close of show entries). And then see what ring and what time your class is being shown. Go to the website of your show superintendent - for example one such website is www.infodogs.com Generally speaking - you must first get your armband, usually found with either the show secretary (and their table or booth will be marked as such). You will receive a conformation email of your entry, print it out and bring it with you on your first show day. Find out where the grooming area is; arrive early so that you are not rushed at all. At least 90 minutes before your class is scheduled to be judged. Now many exhibitors have what is called a ringside grooming table. A small collapsible table that you can carry with your dog to the ringside, and do the very final grooming touch ups. It is also advisable to have a crate for your dog. This you can use within the grooming area, should you need to go to the washroom, or sort something out. For showtime, and at least 15 minutes in advance of what time the judging schedule tells you, go to your ringside with your dog and your armband and your final grooming brush/comb etc. Set up your ringside table, watch the ring and the judging of the breed that is going on before your breed. The ring steward controls the entry of the participants. You will be known by your armband number. The ring steward will call Yorkshire Terrier Puppy Class under 6mths old. Gather your dog and come to the entrance to the ring. The steward will direct you when to enter the ring. Go to your right as you enter the ring. The steward might tell you to stack your dog ..over there and if so do so. If he tells you nothing go to your right, kneel or stand or what ever position you use for stacking your dog, and stack him. Then you wait until the judge comes up to you and gives you instructions. Usually the process is the judge will ask you to go around with your dog and then the down n back, also you will be asked to put your dog up on the examination table for his exam. The table exam is often done after the go around, but not always. My best advice is to really listen well to the judge, and relax and try to have fun in the ring. Once the judge finishes with your dog, you wait on the sideline, while he examines other dogs, then as the total class usually you go around the ring again. The judge will place the dogs 1st 2nd 3 third etc. Wait for your ribbon, then exit the ring. Sorry it is so long, but I do hope you have taken some show handling classes.

| Thank you. This does help!! I appreciate the length. How can I find out what specifically they judge on for the puppies? Is it different than what they judge in adult breed shows? I received the judging book and I'm in a class of 8 very different breed dogs and just one other yorkie. |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Puppies are given a lot of latitude because they are puppies. As the baby puppy class is new to me, and I have not shown before in that class, I am not exactly sure what they will be judging on. As this class the puppy can't earn points, the class is there to help a new puppy get acclimatized and yourself as well to the show environment and the ring. Generally speaking though, the judge will look for attitude that is breed and age appropriate. Willingness to be examined, no growling, no biting, no excessive shying away from touch. Age appropriate gaiting, and then their structure.

| Thanks to all for the advice!!! Without (hardly) any training for her and YouTube videos for me, she won best in breed and second in puppy variety!! I'm so proud!! Now I'm torn on if I want to get her spayed like I had planned or continue to show her. I had so many people tell me today how great she is going to be when she is grown!!! Ahhhh decisions!! |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | Well congrats to you and your gal! Showing a gal is one thing, breeding is quite another. If you are enjoying the show ring and want to continue, just make sure you know how to recognize heats, and keep her safe from mating at all times. There is a lot of growing up a young puppy needs to do, and also many health clearances as well. Her first one should be a BAT test at 16wks old and then repeat at 6months old. This is a special liver function test. Irrespective of showing her or not, this is a good test to do for all Yorkies. As you know LS and or MVD is quite prevalent in the breed. What ever your decision is I wish you both all the best!
