| Collars for obedience training?? I am thinking of enrolling my 2 y.o in obedience class. He could use the socialization as well as the manners...and he needs something to keep him busy!! When I trained my last dog(quite some time ago) I used a choke chain...and it was a much bigger dog....and a much different time. Since then, we've adopted more humane ways to get dogs to do what we want. With yorkies being so small AND there being a risk of a collapsed trachea, I would think any kind of choker would be a bad idea....So...what kind of collar/device is best to use for obedience training?? |

| I use a harness. I do have a slip collar that I use for easy on/off at certain events- Barn Hunt, agility, etc. My favorite harness is Puppia but I have quite a few.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Definitely a harness but be sure that it is a choke free harness. One that sits low on the chest to eliminate any chance of choking, pulling or putting any pressure on his neck when he is in training or taking walks. I would suggest taking your pup to the store with you and trying them on.

| I suggest a buddy belt harness. I use a collar but only for Callie's tags. I did use a collar for about a month when she was a puppy and a few years later she was diagnosed with mild collapsing trachea it could have been from coming from a bad breeder but I think it was the collar and will always blame myself for not knowing better. We did training classes at petsmart and they were ok with harnesses.

| I've got a buddy belt for him already, and I ordered a second one for him last week. I just wanted to make sure that using a harness would be acceptable because I remember they were huge pushers of choke chains in the obedience class I attended when I was younger. |

For a Yorkie a choke chain is never needed. How-ever harnesses in early training are best for sure, until your dog learns not to pull on lead. At this point in time AKC and CKC competitive obedience trials demand the use of a collar and a lead on all breeds.

| Harness with a collar- just need to make the collar 'jingle' to get their attention- Yorkies have way too sensitive windpipes for choke collars-
