| Need Answers Please. I posted in general forum before I saw there was a special one for this so here are my questions. My DH (who will be 62 next year, drives patients to appointments who are elderly as his job) will be retiring next year, and we would like to start a ministry working with some of these people in nursing homes. Just visiting and maybe taking them to the park, etc. to put a tiny bit of spark back in their lives. We would love to include Laddy and Kyra in this work but have no idea how to begin to get them qualified as therapy dogs. Any of you with therapy dogs can you tell me where to start please? What organization do I need to get in touch with etc. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks.

| I checked the site another member posted and found very helpful information put out by the Therapy Dogs International site. They have links to find testers in your specific area, too. Basically, the dog must be over a year old and they say that dogs are not trained to be therapy dogs, they are simply dogs with the personality needed to do such work. They have the testing requirement brochure that you can print off (I did, as I am working to make sure Kipper can do everything they will require). You can e-mail them at tdi@gti.net or go to Therapy Dogs International You can also look into the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test at cgc@akc.org Hope this helps! Thank you to the person who posted this information on your last thread, offering us help to find the right connections! |

| Another one is Therapy Dogs Inc, in case that one is not active in your area.

| I am not sure how close you are to this person, nor the age of the dog you wish to be certified, but when I typed in Missouri, it gave me this information and the person you could contact. If it is not too far away, perhaps it would work. You could also pick another nearby State, if that would be closer. Just an idea for you... Here is her contact information: Airedale Antics Maplewood, MO August 19, 2012 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM Pre-registration required Limit 7 dogs For more information please contact Patty Fiordimondo at love_dobie@hotmail.com |
