I use a litter box. I couldn't use the litter that came with it though (the green pellets made of newspaper, etc.) because Riley wanted to eat it. So now, we just you Piddle Pads. We put the pads in the litter box. It works perfectly. It can be a little difficult to train the puppy if you are not consistent. With Riley, it took us about 2 weeks to let him run in the house freely withouot accidents. At least one person in the house had to sit in the kitchen with Riley 24/7 for about 3 days. If you catch them peeing on the floor, you tell them no and stick them directly in the litter box. With pooing, it's a little easier because you have time. If your pup starts to squat, say no and carry the puppy to the box. If yuo have perfect timing, they will just continue their business in the box. Than you throw a party! Give treats and praise the puppy! We are having a little more trouble training TJ because everytime he goes to use the box, RIley comes over and tries to play with TJ, so TJ stops going and than decides to go somewhere on the floor. Good luck!
