How old is Lexi now? She may be going through the secondary fear stage.
As far as being spooked - dogs are funny. They, apparently, are very superstitious. A car honked it's horn at the same time that pup stepped on something sharp, therefore leaves are scary (they might hurt your paw). Mom was looking the other way and jerked just a little too hard on the leash at the same time the leaves were blowing. Therefore, there is no telling what Mom might do to you when the leaves are blowing. You get the idea.
In other words, you may never know what spooked your pup.
As a general rule, though, I'm told it's best to "jolly them along" and not pick them up and molly-coddle them. I wouldn't go back inside when she acts afraid; she might interrupt that to mean "I'm right. It is scary out here. Even Mom has to go back inside to work up her nerve." Pay her no mind when she acts afraid. Instead reward calm, cooperative behavior.
