Plucking the ear hair is better for the dog. It makes the ear cleaner and less likely to get infected. We (groomers) put ear powder in the ear and then lightly tug the hair and it comes out. For some reason this doesn't bother the dog. I have plucked tons of ear hair and hasn't really hurt any of the dogs that I have done.
Plucking the ear hair also makes it so that the ears when dirty dont hold an odor.
