It does zipper along the top. BUT, there are areas on each side where the pup could poke the head out....or get out depending on how small they are. Sophie may just be too small for it, because she can get her head out and the rest of her body too. This could be sewed up though...depending on how handy you are with a needle and thread. I think it would fit a bigger pup a little better. Sophie is only 3 lbs right now. It measures 15 x 7 x 9". It says it will hold a pet up to 20 lbs. It does have a leash hook on the inside, so that would help secure the pet too.
