Agreed. Here is an article on the subject of salmonella in dogs. It seems that "subclinical" salmonella infections (those that don't have symptoms) are more common in dogs than they are in humans, but dogs do get infections accompanied by symptoms as well:

Listeria infections are less common in dogs, but they do occur, especially if the dog has a compromised immune system:

And even if a dog doesn't show symptoms, it can still pass these bacteria on to humans if they are in close contact.
