Default Legitimate way to tell the actual age of a dog?

IS there an actual good method for telling how old a dog is? I'm not so sure the teeth method is really valid... as there are too many variables for it to even work...

The only obvious way I can tell the age of a dog is when it's a puppy or it's really old but when it's old you can just tell its old- but not by how much. Usually it's because the colors are lighter, the fur doesnt look as it does on a younger dog... and other subtle things... but I wonder if there's anyway like genes or something...
