If you really think it was a placenta then you should go to the vet. The placenta is attached to the wall of the uterus and remains attached (hopefully) until birth..if they separates before teh actual birth of the pup it will die very fast...so I would say it was a water sac that came first...not splitting hairs, just want to help for anyoen who reads this thread in the future for reference.
