Yes, that it interesting. Which editor mode are you using? See the little rectangle box on the right side of the message board? See picture. Click on that and change the formatting and see if the smilies work. The default is "Enhanced Interface," and "Standard Editor - with extra formatting controls" might work better. If you want to change the default, you can find this option at the bottom of this page, under "Message Editor Interface"
