1. In WWII it was used as a lubricant in steam engines. When the war ended, farmers wanted to find other ways to market it so they tried using the plant as animal feed and the oil to be used in cooking for humans.
2. It is genetically modified to produce a plant with lower levels of erucic acid (a known toxin) considered safe for human consumption, considered 'generally recognized as safe per the FDA' and we all know how dependable the FDA is. Personally, I prefer oils that contain no toxins.
