But that's a good idea as well.
don't be afraid to cut! Use muslin, it's very inexpensive and is very similar to to the fabrics most people use on dogs. They come in many different widths and thicknesses. You will start to see how a little trimming changes the fit a lot, for the better or the worse! It's fun, taking a flat piece of fabric and turning it into something 3D, like a sculpture.
