As with any other natural remedy out there, it is not perfectly safe. The food grade usually poses less of a risk, but the dust from neither should be breathed in. It's also an eye and skin irritant. Dusting a coat with it would leave too much room for the pup breathing in dust, imo. And also, unless a dog has intestinal worms, using it as a feed through isn't going to do much of anything. So there is no reason to use it all the time, just when intestinal parasites are present, and even then it is questionable. I would only dust or feed my dogs this type of thing under the supervision of a vet. Carpet seems the best place to use it...
Also make sure if you do decide to use it, you get the right kind because some is sharper than others. Breathing in the dust of tiny, sharp particles could make for some angry lungs. I'd have to wonder if it's a good idea to give a mild abrasive orally. It's not good for the skin because of that. I can't imagine the intestines would benefit from it.
