Good question! Mine like to wander off to a corner when they're in the yard, and I usually unleash when we're at the park to let them do their business. But they do go onleash when they have no other option. Speed can be an issue.

I just walk them at a time I know they have to go and don't stop until they've done their business. The key is to praise, praise, praise when they get it right and give them a treat. They lose their bashfulness quickly when there's a reward at the end.

A trainer told me one time to not let them sniff every thing they come across in search of the perfect poo spot. If it looks like they're gonna go, give them 30 seconds and move on. Eventually, they'll realize it's now or never.
